Adjusting planet carrier Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Measuring tool -VW 382-

t  Dial gauge -VAS 6079-

Determining thickness of shim(s) -A- –  To adjust planet carrier, install components -item 1 ... 9- and -14 ... 18- → Chapter in gearbox housing.

–  Engage parking lock. –  Insert screwdriver through hole of large sun gear to loosen and tighten bolt for small input shaft.   Note If the parking lock cannot be engaged, also block the large input shaft using a second screwdriver.

–  Fit bolt -1- for small input shaft with washer -2- only and tighten. l  Tightening torque: 30 Nm   Note Shim -3- is not fitted at this stage.

–  Set up measuring tool as shown in illustration. Position tip of dial gauge with 1 mm preload on centre of bolt head for small input shaft. –  Set dial gauge to “0”. –  Push small input shaft upwards and take reading. l  Measurement in following example: 2.00 mm. –  Determine thickness of shim(s) “A” according to following table: for part numbers refer to → Electronic parts catalogue:

–  Remove bolt -1- for small input shaft. –  Insert correct shim -3- on small input shaft -arrow-. Example: if the reading is 2.00 mm use a shim with a thickness of 1.7 mm. –  Fit bolt -1- for small input shaft with washer -2- and tighten. l  Tightening torque: 30 Nm –  Carry out check measurement of planetary carrier, as described below.

Check measurement of planet carrier –  Set up measuring tool as shown in illustration. Position tip of dial gauge with 1 mm preload on centre of bolt head for small input shaft. –  Move small input shaft up and down and take reading of play on dial gauge. Play: l  Minimum: 0.23 mm. l  Maximum: 0.37 mm.   Note If the planet carrier has been adjusted with reverse gear brake “B1” and freewheel removed, then install reverse gear brake “B1” before installing planet carrier → Chapter „Assembling planetary gearbox“.
