Removing and installing shift mechanism cover with Tiptronic

Removing

  • ‒ Remove centre console cover over shift mechanism.

=> General Body Assembly; Repair group 68; Shelves, trays and covers; Removing centre console

  • ‒ Remove selector lever handle .
  • ‒ Shift selector lever into "P" by pulling on pull rod.
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.

  • ‒ → Carefully lever out the four retaining tabs -arrow A- with a bent piece of wire or a hook from above (retaining tabs are hard to see from above).

Never prise out the four retaining tabs -arrow B- visible from above, as otherwise the printed circuit board will be destroyed. In addition, the chrome-plated upper part is securely bonded to the upper part of the cover.

Note:

If the four retaining tabs -arrow A- cannot be levered out using a bent piece of wire or a hook, then the centre console will need to be removed to improve access.

  • ‒ Lift off the complete cover of the shift mechanism.
  • ‒ → Press on the unlatching mechanism -arrow A- on connector -1- and pull it out of the cover in the direction of arrow -B-.

Note:

It is necessary to replace the upper part of the cover if the retaining tabs are damaged =>Item 37-26.

Installing:

Install in reverse order. Also note the following points:

  • ‒ → Push connector -1- in the opposite direction to arrow -B- into the cover before the cover is clipped into the shift mechanism.

  • ‒ Clip the cover onto the shift mechanism.

Note:

→ When clipping on the cover, take great care not to bend the four retaining tabs -arrow A- inwards. The retaining tabs of the shift mechanism must engage on the outside without requiring too much force.
