Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387-
  W00-0037
t  Dial gauge -VAS 6079-
Procedure
–  Remove camshafts → Chapter.
–  Mark allocation of bucket tappets for re-installation.
–  Remove bucket tappets from guides and put them down on a clean surface with contact surface facing downwards.
–  Insert camshafts in cylinder head and fit bearing cap at chain sprocket end and fit double bearing cap.
–  Secure dial gauge -VAS 6079- with universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387- to retaining frame as shown in illustrations.

–  Measure axial clearance of inlet camshaft -arrows-.
  A15-0119
–  Measure axial clearance of outlet camshaft -arrows-.
–  Press the camshaft that is to be checked against the dial gauge by hand.
–  Set dial gauge to “0”.
–  Press camshaft away from dial gauge and read off value:
Axial clearance
l  Wear limit for inlet and exhaust camshaft: 0.20 mm.
