Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B-

Procedure
–  Remove automatic gearbox control unit -J217- → Chapter and lay it aside with connector attached.
–  Turn ignition key to “start” position.
–  Move selector lever from “S” to “P” and back to “S”.
l  Automatic gearbox relay -J60- (in relay carrier in electronics box in plenum chamber, position 4) should pick up audibly (can also be felt with a finger).
l  If there is no fault, the starter can be operated in selector lever position “N” or “P”.
–  If relay does not pick up, check voltage supply → Anchor.
–  If relay picks up but starter does not turn, check wiring from automatic gearbox relay -J60- to starter (terminal 50), or check starter according to current flow diagram.

Checking voltage supply
–  Pull out automatic gearbox relay -J60-.
–  Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B- as follows:
  A20-0847
Relay carrier in plenum chamber electronics box, position 4
contact
Measure against
1Earth
5Earth

–  Turn ignition key to “start” position.
t  The LED should light up in each case.
–  If LED does not light up, check wiring → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
   
Checking activation
–  Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B- as follows:
  A20-0847

Measure against
3Battery positive

–  Move selector lever from “S” to “P” and back to “S”.
l  The LED should light up in selector lever positions “N” or “P”, but not in the other positions.
–  If LED does not light up, check selector mechanism → Chapter and adjustment of selector lever cable → Chapter.
