Rear Knuckle: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the rear wheel hub. Refer to WHEEL BEARING/HUB REPLACEMENT - REAR.
2. Remove the brake pipe from the brake hose and backing plate.
3. Remove the backing plate from the rear suspension knuckle. Refer to BRAKE BACKING PLATE REPLACEMENT in DRUM BRAKES.
4. Remove the following components from the rear suspension knuckle (2):

One nut
^
One bolt
^
The trailing arm (1)
5. Loosen the mounting bolts and nuts which secure the tow strut assembly to the rear suspension knuckle.
6. Remove the following components from the rear suspension knuckle (1):

One nut
^
One bolt
^
The lateral link (2)
7. Remove the following components from the rear suspension knuckle:
^
Two nuts
^
Two bolts
^
The strut assembly
8. Remove the rear suspension knuckle from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application.
The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require
thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion inhibitors)
on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping force, and may
damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions can help you
avoid damage to parts and systems.
1. Install the rear suspension knuckle to the vehicle. Secure the rear suspension knuckle to the strut assembly using 2 bolts and 2 nuts.
