Rear Suspension - Rear Strut and Spring Assembly Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Lever, Wheel Knuckle

204 - 159 (14 - 039)
General Equipment
Clamp, brake hose
Transmission jack

Removal

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Remove the wheel.

  1. Detach the brake hose, anti - lock brake system (ABS) and brake pad wear sensor wiring loom (if equipped).

  1. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor electrical connector (if equipped).

  1. Detach the ABS sensor and wiring loom.

  1. Detach the stabilizer bar link and bushing.

  1. Detach the rear arm.

  1. Detach the tie - bar.

  1. Detach the front arm.

  1. Remove the wheel knuckle to strut and spring assembly pinch bolt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the wheel knuckle to prevent damage to the parking brake cable and brake hose (disc brake vehicles only).
    Using the special tool detach the wheel knuckle from the strut and spring assembly.

  1. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember.
    1. Using a suitable jack, raise the strut and spring assembly.
    1. Detach the strut and spring assembly from the crossmember ledge.

  1. Remove the strut and spring assembly.

Installation
  1. Install the strut and spring assembly.

  1. Locate the strut and spring assembly onto the crossmember ledge.
    1. Locate the strut and spring assembly over the crossmember.
    1. Lower the strut and spring assembly onto the crossmember ledge.

  1. Install the wheel knuckle to the strut and spring assembly.

  1. Secure the wheel knuckle to the strut and spring assembly.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The final tightening of the rear suspension components must be carried out with the vehicle weight on the wheels.
    Install the tie - bar to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Install the front arm to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Install the rear arm to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Install the brake hose, ABS and brake pad wear sensor wiring looms.

  1. Install the ABS sensor and wiring loom.
    1. Install the clip
    1. Install the ABS sensor.

  1. Install the wheel.
  1. Check the rear wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to Section  204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
