Supplemental Restraint System - Passenger Air Bag Module Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery cables before disconnecting the electronic air bag control module or any other supplemental restraint system electrical connectors. Failure to follow this instruction may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may cause personal injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Failure to follow any of the warnings that follow or are contained within this section may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may cause personal injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling the air bag module.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not use radio keycode savers when working on the air bag system. Failure to follow this instruction may cause air bag deployment and or personal injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Carry a live air bag with the bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal chance of injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Place a live air bag on a bench or other surface with the trim cover up.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:After deployment, the air bag surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generate combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
    All warnings should be adhered to.
WARNING:
WARNING:Repair is made by installing a new part only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the connectors on the air bags. Doing so may result in air bag deployment and personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Air bag modules with discolored or damaged covers or deployment doors must not be repainted, install a new component.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    • Observe the one minute wait time.

  1. Remove the glove compartment.
    1. Remove the three screws.
    1. Open the glove compartment depressing the side stops to detach the sides.
    1. Remove the glove compartment.

  1. Detach the glove compartment finish panel.
    1. Remove the four screws.
    1. Disengage the clip on the crosscar beam (inset).

  1. Remove the glove compartment finish panel.
    • Detach the glove compartment lamp.

  1. Remove the passenger side register duct.
    1. Disconnect the duct from the heater housing.
    1. Disconnect the duct from the instrument panel register.

  1. Disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.

  1. Remove the bolts from the cross - vehicle beam retaining the rear of the passenger air bag module.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support securely the air bag module when removing the retaining nuts. Failure to follow this instruction may cause personal injury.
    Remove the nuts from the front of the passenger air bag module.

  1. Remove the passenger air bag module.
    • Lower the front edge of the passenger air bag module, roll the passenger air bag module around the cross - vehicle beam, lowering it into the passenger footwell.

Installation

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag vehicle and when handling an air bag.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Carry a live air bag with the bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal chance of injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Repair is made by installing a new part only. If a new part is installed and the new part does not correct the condition, install the original part and carry out the diagnostic procedure again.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Never probe the connectors on the air bags. Doing so may result in air bag deployment and personal injury.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
