Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. General notes
    • Depending on the damage, it is also possible to carry out a sectional replacement of the quarter panel (see Operation 44 512 0).
    • Remove the following: bumper, tail lamp, tailgate seal, vent bezel, filler flap, filler neck, side window, inner trim panels, inner fender, seat cushion, rear seat backrest, seatbelt, roof liner, roof rail cover strip, rocker panel trim and lock striker.
    • Move the floor covering and wiring away from the working area.
    • Pay attention to the cut of the replacement quarter panel at the join with the rocker panel.

  1. Quarter panel
    • Cutting area.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:For welding reasons (2-layer panels), make sure that the dimension for the cut is kept to exactly.
    B-pillar - roof rail
    1. Cut (dimension reference is centre of hole).
    1. Mill out the spot weld, remove the weatherstrip retaining panel.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Roof panel: Only mill out two panel thicknesses. To remove the remaining flange, make a rough cut along the roof panel (better access).
    Quarter panel/roof join
    1. Rough cut.
    1. Mill out the spot welds. Use a 7 mm Ø spot weld miller. In the area of the roof rail/quarter panel join, mill out two of the spot welds more. Do not damage the reinforcement panels underneath.

  1. Quarter panel/roof join
    • Cut point.
    • Lift the roof panel slightly using a plastic wedge.
    • Saw off the remaining join at the roof rail.
    • Remove the remaining flange.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Always apply clinched flange protection and 2-pack metal adhesive just before installing the new part.
    Sealing
    1. Apply clinched flange protection.
    1. Apply 2-pack metal adhesive.

  1. Quarter panel
    1. At the cut edge, spot weld the backing strip and continuous MIG seam weld.
    1. Clinch the wheel arch folded joint and resistance spot weld.
    1. Puddle weld.
    1. Continuous MIG seam weld.

  1. Quarter panel - D-pillar
    • Puddle weld.

  1. Quarter panel - roof rail
    • The welding area of the quarter panel joining flange is on the inside. Continuous MIG seam weld through the opening in the roof rail.

  1. Quarter panel/roof join
    • To join the roof rail, only drill out the welding flange at the quarter panel/roof join to 5mm Ø. Use existing holes.
    1. Puddle weld.
    1. Continuous MIG seam weld.

  1. Weatherstrip retaining panel
    • Place the retaining panel in the same position as the old part and puddle weld.
  1. Sealing - corrosion protection
    • Apply the same thickness of clinched flange sealer as before to the roof/quarter panel join to ensure that the cover strip fits snugly.
