Removal and Installation

Removal

All vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use a socket to loosen the wheel hub retaining bolt to prevent damage.
    Loosen the wheel hub retaining bolt.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Remove the engine undershield.

  1. Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Remove the wheel hub retaining bolt.
Vehicles with 5-speed manual transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Leave the tie-rod end retaining nut in place to protect the ball joint stud.
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
    • Discard the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. Detach the stabilizer bar connecting link from the stabilizer bar.
All vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Detach the wheel hub from the halfshaft.
Vehicles with 5-speed manual transaxle
  1. Remove the intermediate shaft.
    For additional information, refer to Intermediate Shaft in this section.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seals.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Remove and discard the snap ring.
Vehicles with 4-speed automatic transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Remove the halfshaft.
    • Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
    • Remove the bolts.
Vehicles with 5-speed automatic transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Remove the halfshaft.
    • Remove the bolts.
Vehicles with 6-speed manual transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Remove the halfshaft.
    • Remove the bolts.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Attach the halfshaft to the wheel hub.
Vehicles with 6-speed manual transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Install the halfshaft.
Vehicles with 5-speed automatic transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Install the halfshaft.
Vehicles with 4-speed automatic transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    Install the halfshaft.
    • Connect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
Vehicles with 5-speed manual transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 20 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 50 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the snap ring is correctly seated.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new snap ring.
    Install the halfshaft.

  1. Attach the stabilizer bar connecting link to the stabilizer bar.
  1. Install the intermediate shaft.
    For additional information, refer to Intermediate Shaft in this section.
All vehicles

  1. Using the wheel hub retaining bolt, pull the halfshaft into the wheel hub.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new tie-rod end retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Attach the tie-rod end to the wheel knuckle.
    • Tighten the nut in two stages.
    • Stage 1: 30 Nm
    • Stage 2: 90 degrees
  1. With the vehicle on a level surface, fill the transaxle with manual transmission fluid until the oil level is just below the bottom of the filler hole.

  1. Attach the lower arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Install the engine undershield.
  1. Install the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Remove and discard the wheel hub retaining bolt.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new wheel hub retaining bolt.
    Install the wheel hub retaining bolt.
    • Tighten the bolt in two stages.
      • 1. Stage 1: 150 Nm

        2. Stage 2: 90 degrees
