  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The engine undershield remains removed.
    Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section  303-03A Engine Cooling / 303-03B Engine Cooling.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness and the engine engine coolant level sensor electrical connectors.

  1. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery terminal clamp.

  1. Remove the battery side cover.
    1. Detach the hose from the battery side cover.
    1. Disconnect and detach the engine wiring harness electrical connector.

  1. Remove the battery tray.
    1. Detach the wiring harness rail.
    1. Detach the coolant hose from the battery tray.
  1. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section  303-01A Engine / 303-01B Engine / 303-01C Engine / 303-01D Engine.
    • Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.

  1. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the coolant expansion tank.

  1. Disconnect the accelerator cable and remove the accelerator cable bracket (three screws).

  1. Disconnect the coolant hoses.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the selector cables from the shift levers.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Watch out for escaping brake fluid. Allow the brake fluid to drain into a suitable container. Observe the safety regulations for working with brake fluid. For additional information, refer to Section  100-00 General Information.
    Remove the spring clip and disconnect the clutch slave cylinder pressure line from the transaxle.
    • Close off the clutch slave cylinder pressure line with a suitable 10 mm plug.
  1. Detach the clutch slave cylinder pressure line from the selector cable bracket.

  1. Disconnect the coolant hose.

  1. Disconnect the generator positive cable from the battery junction box.

  1. Disconnect the fuel supply line and fuel return line quick release couplings. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the coolant hose from the coolant distribution tube.
  1. Remove the front bumper. For additional information, refer to Section  501-19 Bumpers.
  1. Fabricate two M10 x 250 mm guide bars out of a suitable threaded bar.

  1. Detach the radiator grille opening pannel reinforcement from the fender apron panels on both sides.

  1. Loosen the radiator grille opening panel.
    1. Remove the front bumper bracket upper retaining bolts and screw in the guide bar about 40 mm on both sides.
    1. Remove the front bumper bracket lower retaining bolts on both sides.

  1. Pull the radiator grille opening panel to the front as far as possible.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe from the exhaust manifold.
    • Discard the gasket.

  1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
    • Detach the HO2S cable from the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe from the catalytic converter and detach the exhaust system from the exhaust hanger insulators.
    • Discard the gasket.

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the coolant hoses from the coolant pipes.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor ground cable and detach the generator positive cable from the bracket and from the side member.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.

  1. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.

  1. Remove the generator.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley.

  1. Detach the power steering line bracket from the cylinder block.

  1. Disconnect the air conditioning (A/C) compressor electrical connector.

  1. Detach the power steering pump and the power steering line support bracket from the engine.
    • Secure the power steering pump to the side.

  1. Detach the A/C compressor from the engine and secure it to the side.
    1. Remove the heat shield.
    1. Loosen the refrigerant line support bracket.
    1. Remove the A/C compressor retaining bolts.

  1. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides.

  1. Using the special tool, detach the left-hand tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the halfshaft to prevent damage to the CV joints. The inner CV joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer CV joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Cap the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Detach the halfshaft together with the intermediate shaft from the transaxle and secure them to one side.
    • Discard the bearing cap and locknuts.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the halfshaft to prevent damage to the CV joints. The inner CV joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer CV joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Cap the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the engine support insulator.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Support the engine and transaxle assembly on wooden blocks and secure it with suitable securing straps.
    Carefully lower the vehicle until the engine and transaxle assembly is supported by the workshop table.

  1. Remove the engine and transaxle rear mounting.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    1. Remove and discard the bolts and the nut.

  1. Remove the engine front mounting bracket and disconnect the ground cable from the mounting bracket.
    1. Disconnect the ground cable from the engine front mounting bracket.
    1. Remove the nuts and bolts.

  1. Detach the coolant pipe from the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor and the HO2S electrical connector.
  1. Raise the vehicle and remove the engine and transmission assembly.

  1. Using a suitable engine hoist support the engine and remove the transaxle lower and right-hand retaining bolts.
  1. Remove the securing straps from the engine.

  1. Remove the left-hand transaxle retaining bolts.
  1. Remove the transaxle from the engine.
