Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Center the steering wheel and lock in position.

  1. Detach the steering column shaft from the steering column flexible coupling.
    1. Discard the retaining bolt.
    1. Rotate the clamp plate.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When removing the floor seal do not damage the retaining clips.
    Remove the floor seal from the bulkhead.
    1. Release the lower retaining clips.
    1. Release the upper retaining clip.
    1. Remove the floor seal.

  1. Remove the steering column flexible coupling from the steering gear.
    • Remove and discard the bolt.
  1. Remove the driver side front wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Remove the engine undershield (if equipped).

  1. Remove the radiator splash shield.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine

  1. Detach the exhaust pipe flexible coupling.
    • Discard the gasket and nuts.
Vehicles with 1.6L, 1.8L or 2.0L engine

  1. Detach the catalytic converter.
    • Discard the gasket and nuts.
All Vehicles

  1. Remove the driver side fender splash guards

  1. Detach the bumper support brackets (if equipped).
Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Remove the rear support insulator center bolt.
    1. Loosen the rear support insulator mounting bolts.
    1. Remove the rear support insulator center bolt.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Detach the rear support insulator form the front subframe assembly.
    1. Remove the rear support insulator center bolt.
    1. Remove the rear support insulator mounting bolts.
All Vehicles

  1. Loosen the front support insulator center bolt.
    1. Loosen the front support insulator mounting nuts.
    1. Loosen the front support insulator center bolt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Leave the retaining nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs when releasing the tie-rod ends.
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nuts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When the tie-rod ends are separated from the wheel knuckle the ball joint seals should be protected to prevent damage.
    Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
    1. Release the tie-rod ends.
    1. Remove and discard the retaining nuts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When disconnecting the connecting links, insert a suitable tool between the mounting bracket and connecting link ball joint, to prevent damage to the connecting link ball joint boot.
    Disconnect the connecting links.
    1. Insert the suitable tool.
    1. Remove the nuts.
    1. Disconnect the connecting links.
  1. Using a suitable Transmission jack , support the front subframe assembly.

  1. Lower the front subframe assembly to gain access to the steering gear.
    1. Loosen the front subframe assembly retaining bolts two complete turns.
    1. Remove the front subframe assembly rear retaining bolts.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Remove the rear support insulator.
Vehicles with 1.6L, 1.8L or 2.0L engine

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Whenever the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports should be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, disconnect the power steering line unions.
    • Disconnect the unions.
    • Detach the line clamps.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Whenever the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports should be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, disconnect the power steering line unions.
    • Disconnect the union.
    • Detach the line clamps.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the steering gear cover plate.
All Vehicles

  1. Using the special tool remove the steering gear mounting bolts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the pressure check valve does not fall out of the valve body pressure port when the steering gear assembly is being removed.
    Remove the steering gear assembly through the wheel arch.

Installation

All Vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the pressure check valve is installed correctly.
    Install the pressure check valve.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:If installing a new steering gear assembly, the unions that are supplied fitted to the new steering gear should be removed and saved for future use.
    Using the special tool, install new O-ring seals.
    1. Push the new O-ring seal onto the special tool.
    1. Locate the special tool onto the union and push on the new O-ring seal.

  1. Using the special tool, install the steering gear.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine

  1. Install the steering gear cover plate.

  1. Using the special tool, install the power steering pump to steering gear line.
    • Attach the line clamps.
All vehicles

  1. Using the special tool install the power steering pump to steering gear lines.
Vehicles with automatic transmission

  1. Loosely install the rear support insulator.
All Vehicles

  1. Using the special tools, align the subframe assembly.
    1. Push the alignment pins through the subframe aligning holes.
    1. Slide the locking plate into the locking grooves.
    1. Tighten the alignment pin sleeves.

  1. Install the front subframe assembly bolts.
  1. Remove the alignment pins.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Centralize the rear support insulator.
    1. Centralize the rear support insulator and tighten the mounting bolts.
    1. Install the rear support insulator center bolt.
Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Centralize the rear support insulator.
    1. Centralize the rear support insulator and tighten the mounting bolts.
    1. Install the rear support insulator center bolt.
All Vehicles

  1. Centralize the front support insulator.
    1. Centralize the front support insulator and tighten the mounting nuts.
    1. Tighten the front support insulator center bolt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When installing the connecting links insert a suitable tool between the mounting bracket and connecting link ball joint to prevent damage to the connecting link ball joint boot.
    Connect the connecting links.
    1. Connect the connecting links.
    1. Insert the suitable tool.
    1. Install the nuts.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install new tie-rod end retaining nuts. Failure to follow this instruction, may result in personal injury.
    Attach the tie-rod ends to the wheel knuckles.

  1. Install the driver side fender splash guards.

  1. Attach the bumper support brackets (if equipped).

  1. Install the radiator splash shield.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new gasket and nuts.
    Attach the exhaust pipe flexible coupling.
Vehicles with 1.6L, 1.8L or 2.0L engine

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new gasket and nuts.
    Attach the catalytic converter.

  1. Install the engine undershield (if equipped).
All Vehicles
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Before lowering the vehicle make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Install the driver side front wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Install the steering column flexible coupling to the steering gear.

  1. Install the floor seal.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new steering column to steering column flexible coupling retaining bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Connect the steering column shaft to the steering column flexible coupling.
    1. Rotate the clamp plate.
    1. Install the retaining bolt.
  1. Fill and bleed the power steering system. For additional information, refer to Section  211-00 Steering System - General Information.
