Fuel Charging and Controls - 1.8L Diesel - Idle Speed Adjustment Mondeo 1997 (08/1996-09/2000)

4 mm spacer
3 mm diameter pin

Adjustment

Stage 1 - Idle and residual fuel setting checks
  1. Make sure the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  1. Make sure the idle speed control cable has approximately 2 mm of play at the fuel injection pump.
  1. Check and record the idle speed.

  1. Install a 4 mm spacer between the residual fuel screw and the fuel lever.

  1. Move the stop lever clockwise and install a 3 mm diameter pin in the idle lever.
  1. Check and record the residual idle speed.
  1. If the idle and residual speeds are correct, check that the engine deceleration time from maximum no load speed to idle is not more than five seconds without undershoot or stalling. If adjustment is required repeat the adjustment procedure from step 2.
Stage 2 - Idle resetting procedure

  1. Adjust the residual fuel screw. Refer to the specifications within this section.
  1. Remove the pin from the stop lever.
  1. Remove the spacer from between the residual fuel screw and the fuel lever.

  1. Adjust the idle speed as necessary. Refer to the specifications within this section.
  1. Check the engine deceleration time from maximum no load speed to idle is not more than five seconds without undershoot or stalling.

  1. If the engine stalls, turn the residual fuel screw counterclockwise one quarter turn. Repeat the adjustment procedure from step 6.

  1. If the deceleration time exceeds five seconds, turn the residual fuel screw clockwise one quarter turn. Repeat the adjustment procedure from step 6.
