Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Remover, Transmission Fluid Cooler

Removal

All vehicles

  1. Remove the radiator grille.

  1. Remove the transmission fluid cooler retaining bolts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the radiator undershield.

  1. Remove the left-hand duct (front bumper cover shown removed for clarity).
Vehicles built up to 03/2003

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:When releasing the transaxle cooling system fluid, take care to prevent fluid scalding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Plug the fluid cooler tubes to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the position of the feed and return hoses to aid installation.
    Disconnect the feed and return hose from the transmission fluid cooler.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
Vehicles built 03/2003 onwards

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Cap the fluid cooler openings to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, disconnect the fluid cooler pipes.
    1. Insert the special tool into the quick release coupling.
    1. Slide the special tool along the pipe to release the locking tangs.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the transmission fluid cooler.
    • Lift the transmission fluid cooler off the bracket.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Install the transmission fluid cooler.
    • Push the transmission fluid cooler into the bracket holes.
Vehicles built up to 03/2003

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Align the marks on the feed and return hoses.
    Connect the feed and the return hose to the transmission fluid cooler.
Vehicles built 03/2003 onwards

  1. Connect the fluid cooler pipes.
All vehicles

  1. Install the left-hand duct (front bumper cover shown removed for clarity).

  1. Install the radiator undershield.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Install the transmission fluid cooler retaining bolts.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If a new transmission fluid cooler has been installed, make sure that the active bypass valve was open, before checking the transmission fluid level. The active bypass valve opens at a temperature above 77°C.
    Check the transmission fluid level. For additional information, refer to Section  307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle / 307-01B Automatic Transmission/Transaxle.
