Anti-Lock Control - Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)—Vehicles Built From: 08/2004 Streetka 2003.5 (01/2003-07/2005)
Removal and Installation

CAUTION:
CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    For additional information, refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

  1. Remove the battery positive terminal cover.

  1. Disconnect the battery positive cables.

  1. Remove the battery.

  1. Remove the battery tray.
  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    For additional information, refer to: Air Cleaner (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the brake booster.
    For additional information, refer to: Brake Booster (206-07 Power Brake Actuation, Removal and Installation).

  1. Detach the engine wiring harness electrical connector and battery positive cable from the hydraulic control unit (HCU) support bracket.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module electrical connector and ABS module electrical connector socket to prevent dirt and fluid ingress.
    Disconnect the ABS module electrical connector.
    1. Depress the ABS module electrical connector locking tangs.
    1. Release the ABS module electrical connector retainer.

10. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s).

11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to: (206-00 Brake System - General Information)
    Brake System Bleeding (General Procedures),
    Brake System Pressure Bleeding (General Procedures).

Removal Details

Item 1 : HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Plug the HCU ports to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make a note of the position of the HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes to aid installation.
    Remove the HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes.

Item 2 : HCU to brake caliper brake tubes

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the HCU to brake caliper brake tubes to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Plug the HCU ports to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make a note of the position of the HCU to brake caliper brake tubes to aid installation.
    Disconnect the HCU to brake caliper brake tubes from the HCU.

Item 6 : HCU

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not touch the HCU or ABS module contact points as this may affect the brake system operation. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Plug the ABS module ports to prevent dirt ingress.
    Remove the HCU.

Installation Details

Item 6 : HCU

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not install a damaged HCU. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Make sure that the HCU is correctly located on the ABS module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not drop or knock the HCU. Failure to follow this instruction will cause damage to the hydraulic components.
CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not remove the ABS module port blanking plugs until the HCU is ready to be installed.

Item 4 : HCU and ABS module assembly

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not install a damaged HCU and ABS module assembly. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not drop or knock the HCU and ABS module assembly. Failure to follow this instruction will cause damage to the electronic and hydraulic components.

Item 2 : HCU to brake caliper brake tubes

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not remove the HCU to brake caliper brake tube blanking caps or HCU port blanking plugs until the HCU to brake caliper brake tubes are ready to be installed.

Item 1 : HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not remove the HCU to brake master cylinder brake tube blanking caps or HCU port blanking plugs until the HCU to brake master cylinder brake tubes are ready to be installed.
