Removal and Installation

Removal

Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: E/F
  1. Remove the brake drum.
    For additional information, refer to Brake drum - VIN Plate Axle Code: E/F in this section.
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y
  1. Release the parking brake.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Release the brake shoes (brake drum shown removed for clarity).
    1. Remove the grommet from the brake backing plate.
    1. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, depress the brake shoe adjuster lever.
    1. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, rotate the brake shoe adjuster screw.
    1. Install the grommet.

  1. Remove the brake drum.
    • Remove and discard the brake drum retainer (if equipped).
All vehicles

  1. Remove the hold down springs (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. Hold the wheel cylinder pistons in place with a rubber band (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the wheel cylinder boots.
    Detach the brake shoes from the wheel cylinder (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. Detach the brake shoes from the anchor block (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. Remove the primary brake shoe (brake shoes shown removed for clarity).
    1. Remove the upper return spring.
    1. Remove the brake shoe adjuster.
    1. Remove the lower return spring.

  1. Remove the secondary brake shoe (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).
    1. Compress the parking brake cable spring.
    1. Detach the parking brake cable.

Installation

All vehicles
  1. Clean the backing plate and apply grease to the brake shoe contact points.

  1. Install the parking brake cable to the secondary shoe (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. Install the brake shoe adjuster to the primary shoe.
    1. Install the brake shoe adjuster lever.
    1. Install the brake shoe adjuster.
    1. Install the upper return spring.
Vehicles with 2.3L engine or 2.4L diesel engine

  1. Adjust the brake shoe adjuster.
Vehicles with 2.0L diesel engine

  1. Adjust the brake shoe adjuster.
All vehicles

  1. Assemble the brake shoes.
    1. Install the upper return spring to the secondary shoe.
    1. Install the lower return spring to the secondary shoe.

  1. Install the brake shoes to the anchor block (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).
  1. Remove the rubber band holding the wheel cylinder pistons in place.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the wheel cylinder boots.
    Install the brake shoes to the wheel cylinder (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).

  1. Install the hold down springs (vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y shown).
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y

  1. Install the brake drum.
  1. Install the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: E/F
  1. Install the brake drum.
    For additional information, refer to Brake drum - VIN Plate Axle Code: E/F in this section.
All vehicles
  1. Depress the brake pedal to adjust the brake shoes.
