Removing and installing air conditioner compressor
Removing and installing air conditioner compressor
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Venting device for the air conditioner -SAT 4006D-
  L00-10186
t  Dynamometric wrench -V.A.G 1331- (5 - 50 Nm)
  Note
t  The refrigerant circuit must be purged with refrigerant R134a under the following circumstances:
t  If dirt or other contamination is in the circuit.
t  If during the evacuation of a leak-tight refrigerant circuit the vacuum is not maintained at the gauge (there is moisture in the refrigerant circuit and this generates vapour pressure).
t  If the refrigerant circuit has remained open longer than necessary for assembly (e.g. after an accident).
t  When pressure and temperature measurements in the refrigerant circuit indicate that there is moisture in the refrigerant circuit.
t  There is doubt about the amount of refrigerant oil in the refrigerant circuit.
t  The air conditioner compressor has to be exchanged because of internal damage (e.g. noisy or lack of power).
  Note
t  The procedure for flushing using the refrigerant R134a is described in ELSA in the section → Air conditioning system with refrigerant R134a Technical Data; Refrigerant circuit: Remove the contamination.
t  Notes on repair work to vehicles with air conditioning and on handling refrigerant can be found in ELSA under repair group → Air conditioning system with refrigerant R134a; Technical data.
t  Notes on repair work to vehicles with air conditioning can be found in ELSA under repair group → Air conditioning system with refrigerant R134a; Technical data.
Removal:
–  Discharge refrigerant system → Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a.
–  Remove refrigerant pipes from the compressor → Chapter.
–  Detach compressor from support → Chapter.
Installation
Attach in reverse order; note the following:
Before fitting the compressor → Air conditioning - with refrigerant R134a SEAT.
  Note
t  Coat O-rings lightly with refrigerant oil before fitting → Chapter.
t  When the compressor is removed, there is still an undefined amount of refrigeration oil inside, for this reason note the comments about compressor replacement → Air conditioning - with refrigerant R134a SEAT.
t  Tightening torques → Chapter and → Chapter.
t  Replace all O-ring seals on the opened junctions, version → Spare parts catalogue.
–  Do not start engine until after reconnecting refrigerant circuit.
–  Following the fitting of a new compressor or refilling the refrigerant oil (after cleaning the refrigerant circuit) and before fitting the Poly-V belt, operate the compressor by hand for about 10 rotations before restarting the engine to avoid damage to the compressor.
–  Engine as soon as refrigerant circuit has been properly assembled.
  Note
t  Different compressors depending on the country version and engine → Spare parts catalogue.
t  The compressor is always powered by a pulley (there is no magnetic coupling):
t  To prevent compressor damage when refrigerant circuit is empty, compressor is provided with an „internal oil circuit“. There must be a minimum of refrigeration oil in the compressor for the internal lubrication to work correctly.
t  Do not start the engine unless the refrigerant circuit has been properly assembled. If, for example, refrigerant pipes have not been connected to compressor, heat generation inside compressor with engine running may lead to destruction of compressor.
t  The Compressor regulation valve, air conditioning -N280- is not activated when refrigerant circuit is empty and compressor runs at idle with engine.
t  However, given that there is no refrigerant, the refrigeration oil necessary for compressor lubrication is not moved.
t  To avoid damage to the compressor, the lubrication of the compressor is secured by a „internal lubrication circuit“.
t  If the engine has to be started when the refrigerant circuit is empty:
t  The refrigerant circuit must be fully assembled.
t  There must be a minimum of 25 % of the required refrigeration oil for the lubrication circuit.
t  The engine speed must not exceed 2500 rpm.
t  The engine must only be used for the minimum amount of time.
–  When starting the engine for the first time following the filling of the refrigeration circuit, note the following:
–  Start the engine with the compressor deactivated. (For the Climatronic system, operation mode „Econ“, for the Climatic system, the button „AC“ deselected) and wait until the stable idle engine speed has been reached.
Vehicles fitted with Climatronic:
–  Select the lowest temperature setting (for driver and passenger side) on the Air conditioning control unit -J301-, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
–  Now activate the compressor (operation mode „Auto“ and „Econ“ deactivated) and let run, minimum, 5 min. with the engine at idle speed.
Vehicles fitted with Climatic
–  With the button „AC“ pressed, the speed „1“ of the Fresh air blower -V2- is selected along with the lowest possible temperature.
–  Open the dash panel vents.
