Removal   Caution Before carrying out any work on the electrical system and disassembly of the steering wheel, the following operations should be carried out: t  Connect the earth connection to the battery. t  Place the wheels facing forwards. Failure to observe these instructions can lead to failure of the Airbag system later! Vehicles with airbag up to 08.00 –  Remove the airbag unit → Chapter. –  Removing steering wheel → Chapter. Vehicles with airbag from 09.00 –  Remove the airbag unit → Chapter. –  Removing steering wheel → Chapter. Vehicles without airbag –  Removing steering wheel . –  Remove the lower part of the covering for the steering column combination switch.

–  Remove the rubber foam tube (if fitted) from the connector and uncouple the connector -1-. All vehicles (continued) –  Remove the upper covering for the steering column combination switch. –  Remove left-hand side stowage space.

–  Remove the foot rest area cover, to do this, remove the screws -arrows-.

–  Remove the cover -1-; by unscrewing the bolt -arrow-.

–  Unscrew the bolt from the cross member -arrow-. –  Remove the steering mount padding.

–  Pull out the cable guide -1- from the steering mount. Vehicles fitted with control unit for immobiliser

–  Pull out the immobiliser control unit -1-. Vehicles fitted with reading device for immobiliser

–  Remove the immobiliser reading coil very carefully -arrow- from the steering lock casing.

–  Remove the plastic cover -arrow- covering the connector of the starter and ignition switch. –  Remove the connector from the starter and ignition switch. All vehicles (continued) –  Pull out the connection from the body of the steering lock.

–  Drill out the rupture bolts -1- or use a suitable chisel .   WARNING Wear protective glasses. –  Remove the beam articulation from the steering gear and, at the same time, extract the steering mount backwards. –  If necessary, remove the drill bolts from the support (the second bolt cannot be seen in the diagram).
