Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Cooling system testing device, e.g. -V.A.G 1274-
t  Adapter for cooling system testing device, e.g. -V.A.G 1274/8-
t  Adapter for cooling system testing device, e.g. -V.A.G 1274/9-
Test condition
l  Engine is at operating temperature.
Test sequence
  WARNING
Hot steam may escape when the compensation bottle is opened.
t  Wear safety goggles and safety clothing, in order to avoid eye injuries and scalding.
t  Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Open compensation bottle.
   
–  Position the cooling system testing device -V.A.G 1274- with adapter -V.A.G 1274/8- on the coolant expansion reservoir.
–  Using the hand pump of the testing device generate an overpressure of approx. 0.1 MPa (1.0 bar).
If the pressure drops:
–  Search position of the leak and repair fault.
Testing the pressure relief valve in the cap
  S19-0236
–  Position the cooling system testing device -V.A.G 1274- with adapter -V.A.G 1274/9- on the cap.
–  Operate the handpump.
l  The pressure relief valve should open at a pressure of 0.14 ... 0.16 MPa (1.4 ... 1.6 bar).
If the pressure relief valve opens too early or too late:
–  Replace cap.
