Testing knock sensor
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Handheld multimeter, e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A -
t  Measuring tool set -V.A.G 1594 A -
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/22-
  Note
t  To check the function of the knock sensors, read measured value block, display groups 014, 015, 016 and 017.
t  Fitting location of the plug connections and the knock sensor → Chapter.
t  The knock sensor itself cannot be tested electrically (interrogate fault memory → Chapter).
t  The perfect functioning of the knock sensor requires a tightening torque of 20 Nm.
t  Check plug connection for corrosion.
t  Only use gilded contacts to repair contacts in the knock sensor plug connection.
Testing knock sensor cables
–  Disconnect plug connection of the knock sensor in the engine compartment.

–  Test all three contacts at plug of knock sensor for short-circuits relatively to each other. The wiring must have no connection to each other.
–  If there is a connection, replace the knock sensor.
Check the cables of the knock sensor to the engine control unit.
–  Connect the test box -V.A.G 1598/22 - to the wiring loom of the engine control unit → Chapter.
  S28-0092
–  Test wiring between the knock sensor and the engine control unit for continuity or short-circuit relative to each other or short-circuit to positive or earth according to the current flow diagram → Current flow diagrams and Fitting locations. Contact assignment at the plug:
  S28-0093
Plug contactBush to test box
1 (signal)68
2 (earth)67
3 (screening)67

Specified value: max. 1 Ω.
–  If the specified value is not reached, eliminate line interruption or short-circuit.
