Testing the fuel pressure regulator and holding pressure (pressure in system)
Testing the fuel pressure regulator and holding pressure (pressure in system)
Special tools, test equipment as well as aids required
t  Pressure gauge appliance, e.g. -V.A.G 1318-
t  Pressure hose with connections, e.g. - V.A.G 1318/8 -
t  Adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1318/9-
t  Adapter, e.g. -V.A.G 1318/17-
Test conditions
l  Delivery rate of fuel delivery unit o.k., testing → 1.8 l/110 kW engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.20
l  Fuel pump relay OK
l  Fuel filter o.k.
l  Battery voltage o.k.
Test sequence
  Note
The fuel pressure regulator regulates the fuel pressure in line with the intake manifold pressure.
  WARNING
The fuel system is under pressure! Place cleaning cloths around the connection point before detaching hose connections. Reduce pressure by carefully removing the hoses.

–  Disconnect the fuel-intake hose -1- from the feed line.
  A10-0140
–  Connect pressure gauge with the adapters to the feed line.
–  Open shut-off cock of the pressure measuring device. Lever points in direction of flow.
–  Start engine and run in idle.
–  Measure fuel pressure.
Specified value: approx. 0.25 MPa (2.5 bar) overpressure
  S24-0163
–  Detach vacuum hose -arrow- from fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure must rise to approx. 0.3 MPa (3 bar).
–  Switch off ignition.
If the specified value is not reached:
–  Test for leaks and holding pressure. Observe pressure drop at gauge. After 10 minutes there must still be at least 0,20 MPa (2 bar) present.
If the pressure drops below 0.20 MPa (2 bar):
–  Check line connections, “O” -rings on fuel rail and injectors for leaks.
–  Test non-return valve of fuel pump → 1.8 ltr./110 kW engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.20.
–  Start engine and run in idle.
  N24-0761
–  After the pressure has been built up, switch ignition off. The shut-off valve to the pressure measuring device -arrow- must be closed at the same time (lever at right angles to the direction of flow).
–  Observe pressure drop at gauge.
If the pressure again drops:
–  Replace fuel pressure regulator.
  N24-0618
–  Open shut-off cock of pressure measuring device (lever points in direction of flow).
–  Start engine and run in idle.
–  After the pressure has been built up, clamp together the return hose tightly and switch off ignition at the same time. Release again the return-flow hose.
If the pressure does not drop:
–  Replace fuel pressure regulator.
  Note
Before removing the pressure gauge appliance reduce fuel pressure by opening the shutoff cock. While doing so grip vessel before the connection.
