Removing and installing trailing arm with bracket
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Support -T10149-
t  Engine/gearbox jack, e.g. -V.A.G 1383/A -
Removing:
–  Remove wheel.
–  Remove coil spring → Chapter.
–  Unscrew screw for hand brake cable holder from trailing arm.

–  Remove coupling rod -1- from anti-roll bar and trailing arm with wheel-bearing housing.
–  Unscrew screws -arrows- for connecting the trailing arm to the wheel-bearing housing.
  S42-0224
–  Mark the installed position of the bracket on the body.
–  Release the screws of the bracket -arrows-.
–  Remove the trailing arm with the bracket.
Replace the trailing arm
If the trailing arm should be replaced, the bracket must be removed from the trailing arm.
The installation position of the bracket to the trailing arm must then be adjusted.
  S42-0182
Determine the fitting position of the bracket to the trailing arm
The dimension -a-: is 34 ± 1 mm.
1 - Bearing bracket
2 - Trailing arm
–  If the dimension -a- is adjusted, tighten the screw.
Installing:
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Pay attention to the following:
  Note
Pay attention to correct installation position of trailing arm and wheel-bearing housing.
  S42-0183
Installation position of trailing arm and wheel-bearing housing.
The screwed connection of the trailing arm/wheel-bearing housing must only be tightened if all other components (absolutely spring and shock absorber) of the respective wheel suspension are already fitted. For tightening, the wheel-bearing housing must be in the unladen weight position → Chapter. Only move the trailing arm and the wheel-bearing housing into the necessary position for tightening the screwed connection -arrows- under these conditions.
  Note
Note the following work steps and absolutely ensure that you follow the sequence!
  S42-0161
–  Screw trailing arm including bracket with screws -1- onto the wheel-bearing housing, but do not tighten yet.
–  Insert the coupling rod -2- into the trailing arm with wheel-bearing housing, but do not tighten the nut yet!
–  Raise wheel-bearing housing with engine/gearbox jack e. g. -V.A.G 1383/A- and support -T10149 - until the bracket rests on the body.
  S42-0251
–  Tighten screws -arrows- to the marked fitting location - to the „former positions“.
–  Lower wheel suspension with engine/gearbox jack e.g. -V.A.G 1383/A- and remove support - T10149 - from wheel hub.
–  Install coil spring → Chapter.
  S42-0182
–  Tighten screws -arrows- of trailing arm with tightening torque, while doing so pay attention to the required position of the trailing arm and wheel-bearing housing → Anchor.
–  Screw coupling rod -arrow- to the anti-roll bar and tighten the nuts of the coupling rod.
–  Screw holder for hand brake cable onto trailing arm.
–  Installing and tightening the wheel.
–  Perform chassis alignment → Chapter
