Testing the compression
Testing the compression
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spark plug wrench e.g. -3122 B-
t  Assembly tool -T10029-
t  Torque wrench
t  Compression tester e. g. -V.A.G 1763-
Test conditions
l  Engine oil temperature must be at least 30°C.
l  Voltage supply o.k.
Procedure

–  Unplug the 4-pin connector -1- from the ignition transformer -N152--2-.
  N28-0145
–  Remove fuse no. 34 from the fuse holder.
  Note
Removing fuse 34 interrupts the voltage supply of the injectors.
–  Use assembly tool -T10029- to unplug spark plug connector.
–  Unscrew spark plugs with spark plug wrench e. g. -3122 B-.
–  Check compression pressure with compression tester -V.A.G 1381- or -V.A.G 1763-.
  Note
Use of tester ⇒ Operating Instructions.
–  Operate starter until the tester no longer indicates a pressure rise.
Compression readings:
new: 1...1.3 MPa (10...13 bar) excess pressure Wear limit: 0.75 MPa (7.5 bar) excess pressure
Admissible difference in pressure between all cylinders: 0.3 MPa (3 bar)
–  Delete the contents of the fault memory for the engine control unit at the end as error messages were stored due to removal of the fuse → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
