Removing the gearbox
Removing the gearbox
–  First check whether a coded radio set has been installed. If this is the case obtain the anti-theft code.
–  Disconnect the battery-earth strap with the ignition off.
–  Remove engine cover.
–  Unscrew the coolant expansion bottle and and lay to one side.
–  Remove the intake manifold cover.
–  Remove intake hose from air mass meter → Engine → Rep. Gr.24.
   
–  Unscrew the inlet air cover if present -arrows- and lay to one side → Engine → Rep. Gr.24.
–  Remove front wheels.

–  Remove covers from wheelhousing -arrows- if present.
–  Remove noise insulation below engine/gearbox.
–  Remove noise insulation bracket.
–  Remove front exhaust system with catalytic converter → Engine → Rep. Gr.26.

–  Remove cover plate over the right drive shaft -arrows 1 und 2-.
–  Remove cover plate, if present, over left drive shaft.
–  Remove drive shaft from flange shaft and tie up as far as possible; do not damage the surface protection.

–  Remove shift rods -arrow A-.
–  Remove push rod by unscrewing the screw -arrow B-.

–  If present, unplug connector from speedometer sender -G22--arrow A-.
–  Unplug connector from reversing light switch -F4--Arrow B-. Remove all other electrical connections and earth cables from the gearbox and from the fixing screws for the engine/gearbox.

–  Remove the engine speed sender -G28- on the left of the gearbox housing.

–  Unscrew screws -arrows- for stop/torque arm -1- (the figure shows the vehicle with 6-cylinder engine).

–  Unscrew the engine/gearbox connecting bolts -arrow- from the engine side.
–  Remove starter from engine/gearbox and secure it → Electrical System → Rep. Gr.27.
  Note
The starter cables must not be detached.
–  Complete the gearbox jack with gearbox mount -3282-, Adjusting Plate -3282/10- for “012”/“01W” gearbox and mounting elements as follows:
t  Position adjusting plate -3282/10- on gearbox mount -3282- (adjusting plate fits in only one position).
t  Align arms of the gearbox mount with the holes in the adjusting plate.
Vehicles fitted with a 4 cylinder engine

–  Screw in the mounting elements -A- as shown on adjusting plate.
Vehicles fitted with a 6 cylinder engine
–  Screw in the mounting elements -A- as shown on adjusting plate.
–  Mounting element -A- (in the left illustration) is not used or is attached outside the adjusting plate on the gearbox → Anchor, fig. S34-0614.

–  Place gearbox jack under the vehicle, arrow symbol -B- (⇒, Fig. V34-2583) on adjusting plate indicates direction of travel/vehicle.

–  Align adjusting plate parallel to the gearbox and lock securing mount -arrow- at gearbox.
Vehicles fitted with a 6 cylinder engine
  N34-0614
–  Attach the 3rd mounting element of the gearbox mount -3282- with a screw (M8) on the rear left of the gearbox -arrow-.

–  Unscrew right and left gearbox support bracket complete with bonded rubber bush from gearbox and from assembly carrier -1- and -2-.
Vehicles fitted with a 4 cylinder engine
  A34-0123
–  Unscrew right gearbox support bracket complete with bonded rubber bush from gearbox and from assembly carrier -1- and -3-.
–  Unscrew left gearbox support from rubber bush -2-.

–  Carefully lower the gearbox slightly.
–  Remove engine/gearbox connecting screws at the top.
  Note
On vehicles with a 6-cylinder engine the top connecting screws must only be unscrewed, however not pulled out. Observe this when mounting.
–  Press the gearbox out of the sleeves.
Vehicles fitted with a 6 cylinder engine
  N34-0595
–  Turn the gearbox via the spindle -1- of the gearbox mount -3282- on the right slightly downwards -arrow A-.
–  When installing ensure that the screw-on flange of the gearbox must be guided past the coolant hose -arrow B-.

–  Separate the gearbox from the flywheel and lower sufficiently until the slave cylinder is accessible.

–  Remove the slave cylinder from the gearbox -arrow- and secure with wire. Do not open line system.
  Note
After removing the slave cylinder, do not operate the clutch pedal.
–  Lower the gearbox fully.
  Note
When lowering the gearbox, ensure clearance to drive shafts and the gearshift mechanism.
Secure the gearbox with the gearbox mount -MP3-501- and on the assembly stand -MP9-101- before performing assembly work → Chapter.
