Inspect Steering Gear

Note:

Please make sure that the following procedure is done after removing the steering bevel gear assembly, because the shaft oil seal
cannot be inspected when it is on the vehicle.

a.

Position the steering bevel gear assembly so that any rust contaminated water will run out of the housing.

If any rust contaminated water comes out, proceed to step 6 to install a new steering bevel gear assembly.

Note:

There is a possibility that oil drops of grease may be found on interior surfaces or that moist air may cause condensation. Such
conditions do not require replacement of the steering bevel gear assembly.

Rotate either of the bevel gear shafts more than one complete turn to check for the existence of corrosion on the teeth of each bevel gear.

If any corrosion is found on the bevel gear tooth, proceed to step 6 to install a new steering bevel gear assembly.

Note:

Slight corrosion may be visible on the bevel gear plate and plate mounting bolts as well as on the lock bolt and nut, due to the
lack of antirust coating on these components. However, this condition alone does not require replacement of the steering bevel
gear assembly.

c.

Remove two dust covers and check condition of the two shaft oil seals.

If either seal is found to be overturned as shown in the illustration, proceed to step 6 to install a new steering bevel gear assembly.

d.

If none of the above mentioned three problems is found, proceed to step 5 to reseal the steering bevel gear cover.
