Transmission Fluid Level, Check (AF 13-II/AF 17/AF 20/AF 22)

Note:   A check of the colour and smell of the automatic transmission fluid provides initial diagnostic data on the condition of the mechanical components of the automatic transmission.

  Inspect

  • Vehicle positioned horizontally.
  • Parking brake applied.
  • Brake pedal applied.
  • Engine runs warm at idle speed.
  • Switch selector level once through all positions from P to 1 and then back again to P.
  • Engine OFF.
  • Drain small quantities of transmission fluid and fill into glass.

Check colour and smell of drained transmission fluid:

  • For red, clear transmission fluid without particles, continue trouble-shooting according to Astra-G Checking Procedure "AF 13-II/AF 17/AF 20/AF 22 Automatic 4-Speed Transmission Astra-G"
  • For brownish-black, cloudy and burnt smelling transmission fluid it is recommended that the transmission be disassembled in order to check and, if necessary, replace the lining plates of the respective clutches (C) or brakes (B).
  • If there is a high percentage of metal particles in the transmission fluid then it is recommended that the transmission be replaced with one that has been overhauled.

Torque

Attach fluid drain bolt to transmission with new seal ring – 40 Nm / 29.5 lbf. ft.

  Inspect

Check level of transmission fluid and correct if necessary – see operation "Transmission Fluid Level, Check and Correct (AF 13-II/AF 17/AF 20/AF 22)".
