Wheel Bearing Unit, Remove and Install

  Remove

1.   Release handbrake
•   Release handbrake lever (1)
•   Detach gaiter of handbrake lever(2)
•   Slacken handbrake cable by turning back the adjusting nut (3)

2.   Remove rear wheel.
3.   In vehicles with drum brake: remove brake drum LUREF_1.gif
Note:   To prevent the brake anchor plate from falling too far and damaging the brake pipe, tie brake pipe to rear spring in vicinity of wheel brake cylinder using cable straps.
4.   In vehicles with disc brakes: detach handbrake cable from brake caliper
•   Push down operating lever at brake caliper using screwdriver
•   Remove handbrake cable
•   Detach retaining clip
•   Pull handbrake cable out of bracket
5.   Detach brake caliper with brake carrier from brake backing plate
Note:   If it is not possible to pull brake caliper with brake carrier and installed brake pads from brake disc because of brake disc wear, for example: remove brake pads from rear wheel brake LUREF_1.gif
•   Unscrew 2x brake carrier bolts from brake carrier plate
•   Pull brake caliper with brake carrier from brake disc
•   Suspend brake caliper and brake carrier from rear spring using suitable wire
6.   Remove brake disc from rear wheel brake LUREF_1.gif
7.   Attach brake carrier plate (3) to rear spring using cable straps
8.   Disconnect wiring harness plug (1) from wheel sensor
9.   Detach wheel bearing unit from rear axle
•   Unscrew 4x nuts (arrows) from wheel bearing unit
•   Remove wheel bearing unit with cover plate (2 - in vehicles with disc brakes)

  Install

10.   In vehicles with disc brake: attach wheel bearing unit, cover plate (3) and brake carrier plate (2) to rear axle
•   Tighten 4x new nut (arrows) 50 Nm + 30° + 15°
11.   In vehicles with drum brake: attach wheel bearing unit and brake anchor plate to rear axle
•   Tighten 4x new nut 50 Nm + 30° + 15°
12.   Connect wheel sensor wiring harness (1)
13.   In vehicles with disc brakes: Install brake disc of rear wheel brake
14.   Attach brake calliper with brake carrier to brake anchor plate 100 Nm
•   Slide brake caliper onto brake disc
•   Screw in 2x bolt
Note:   Clean thread and insert bolt with locking compound
15.   If removed: install brake pads of rear wheel brake LUREF_1.gif
16.   Attach handbrake cable to brake caliper
•   Insert handbrake cable into bracket on brake caliper
•   Attach retaining clip to handbrake cable
•   Push down operating lever at brake caliper using screwdriver
•   Fit handbrake cable
17.   In vehicles with drum brakes: install brake drum LUREF_1.gif

18.   Attach rear wheel 110 Nm
19.   Adjust handbrake
