Changing the tyres and wheel trims

If it is necessary to change the tyres in the course of the pre-delivery inspection or a service, please note that certain tyre makes have a protective rim bead around the circumference to protect aluminium alloy rims from damage. If wheel trims are used on steel wheels with tyres which have a protective rim bead, the following must be observed:

  • Use wheel trims and tyres approved by Opel which therefore fulfil all the requirements imposed on the respective wheel/tyre combination.
  • If wheel trims and tyres not approved by Opel are used, the tyres should not have a rim protection bead.
  • Unsuitable tyres or wheel trims can lead to a sudden loss of air and therefore to accidents.

Fit wheel covers

Fit the wheel trim or the separate plastic caps supplied. When fitting the wheel trim make sure that you locate the valve of the tyre in the special valve hole provided. Press the trim firmly in place using both hands.

To prevent damage, the procedure noted below must be followed without fail during fitting and removal of the hub cover.

Fitting:

  1. Place the hub cover positioning pins in the relevant holes on the rim (arrow).
  2. Position the hub cover on the rim and press gently.
  3. Press gently on the middle of the hub cover until this engages, then engage the five arms one after the other.

Dismantling:

  1. Carefully release the five arms from the hub cover, one after the other.
  2. Press on the back of the hub cover from the inside of the rim until this comes loose.

Note:   The hub cover must only be removed when the wheel is not on the car as damage may otherwise result.

Pneumatic wrenches are used for determining inspection time allowances for the "Detaching wheel nuts" operation.

Before fitting wheel bolts, clean the wheel bolt cone and grease lightly with roller bearing grease (NOT Agila-B, Antara, Astra-J, Zafira-C, Insignia). Under no circumstances may the thread be greased!

Clean the contact surfaces of the wheels on the brake disc (wire brush) and remove grease. Grease may be applied only to the centring pin, and not the contact surface (rim, brake disc pot).

Note:   The fastening nuts for the Astra-J and Insignia are coated. The pale blue coating guarantees a constant coefficient of friction even when used repeatedly. For this reason, it is no longer necessary to degrease the fastening nut taper! Nor are there any bushes in the aluminium wheels! The threaded bolts and wheel contact surfaces should be cleaned on wheel change, and in particular any rust removed.
