                               X 90/Ter. 6 and 18

ABS-2EH without ETC:

                               X 89/Ter. 6 and 14

ETC = Electronic Traction Control

Notes for Trouble-shooting:

Nominal Value:

Cause of Fault:

·   Ignition ON

     Slowly turn rear left/rear right wheel by hand

approx. 5 km/h (3 MPH) or

TECH 1 display approx. the same as speedometer display

·   Distance from wheel speed sensor to ring gear (pulse pick-up) too large*

·   Nominal value:         0.2 to 1.5 mm/

                                      0.008 to 0.06 in.

·   Wheel speed sensor (or bracket) loose*

·   Ring gear (pulse pick-up) damaged*

     Nominal value:         29 teeth

·   Wheel speed sensors mixed up

* Cannot be checked on wheel speed sensors which are integrated into the wheel bearing unit.

Only applies to ABS-2E, RL wheel speed sensor:

·   Ignition OFF

     Remove plug from control unit K 50

     Connect ohmmeter between plug K 50/Ter. 8 and Ter. 21, raise vehicle and move cable by hand to and fro, especially in area of wheel housing

     Check that the measured value displayed stays constant

0.8 to 1.7 kW

·   Plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19 defective

·   Loose contact between plug connection X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Lead interruption from control unit K 50/Ter. 8 or Ter. 9 to plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Connect ohmmeter between plug K 50/ Ter. 8 and Ter. 10

 > 100 kW

(over entire lifespan)

·   Short circuit to ground

     Transfer resistance to ground at plug connection X 78

·   Set voltmeter to alternating current Connect voltmeter to control unit plug K 50/Ter. 8 and Ter. 9

     Turn wheel at speed of 1 turn per second

> 30 mV

·   Lead interruption between plug X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

Only applies to ABS-2EH with ETC, RL wheel speed sensor:

·   Ignition OFF

     Remove plug from control unit U 4.8 Connect ohmmeter between plug X 90/Ter. 10 and Ter. 9, raise vehicle and move cable by hand to and fro, especially in area of wheel housing

     Check that the measured value displayed stays constant

0.8 to 1.7 kW

·   Plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19 defective

·   Loose contact between plug connection X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Lead interruption from control unit X 90/Ter. 10 or Ter. 9 to plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Set voltmeter to alternating current Connect voltmeter to control unit plug X 90/Ter. 10 and Ter. 9

     Turn wheel at speed of 1 turn per second

> 30 mV

·   Lead interruption between plug X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

Only applies to ABS-2EH without ETC, RL wheel speed sensor:

·   Ignition OFF

     Check that the measured value displayed

·   Plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19 defective

·   Loose contact between plug connection X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Lead interruption from control unit X 89/Ter. 2 or Ter. 4 to plug connection X 78 of wheel speed sensor P 19

·   Set voltmeter to alternating current Connect voltmeter to control unit plug X 89/Ter. 2 and Ter. 4

     Turn wheel at speed of 1 turn per second

·   Lead interruption between plug X 78 and wheel speed sensor P 19

Only applies to ABS-2E, RR wheel speed sensor:

·   Ignition OFF

     Remove plug from control unit K 50

     Connect ohmmeter between plug K 50/Ter. 24 and Ter. 26, raise vehicle and move cable by hand to and fro, especially in area of wheel housing

     Check that the measured value displayed stays constant

0.8 to 1.7 kW

·   Plug connection X 79 of wheel speed sensor P 20 defective

·   Loose contact between plug connection X 79 and wheel speed sensor P 20

·   Lead interruption from control unit K 50/Ter. 24 or Ter. 26 to plug connection X 79 of wheel speed sensor P 20

·   Connect ohmmeter between plug K 50/ Ter. 24 and Ter. 10

> 100 kW

·   Short circuit to ground

·   Plug connection X 79 of wheel speed sensor P 20 defective

·   Loose contact between plug connection X 79 and wheel speed sensor P 20

·   Lead interruption from control unit X 90/Ter. 6 or Ter. 18 to plug connection X 79 of wheel speed sensor P 20

·   Set voltmeter to alternating current Connect voltmeter to control unit plug X 90/ Ter. 6 and Ter. 18

     Turn wheel at speed of 1 turn per second

> 30 mV
