J700100 Starter, Remove and Install (Y 17 DTL,
without AC, LHD)
1. Open bonnet
Caution!
On vehicles from model year 04 with ESP - the steering angle
sensor loses its basic adjustment each time the battery is
disconnected. It must be recalibrated.
2. Disconnect battery
3. Release upper part of starter
- Remove upper bolt (arrow)
- Detach ground cable
4. Raise vehicle

5. Remove shift guide bracket (1)
- Remove retaining clip (2)
- Remove bolt (4)
- Remove from splines
|
|
6. Detach wiring harness plug (1)
- From crankshaft pulse pick-up (2)
|
|
7. Detach vacuum hose (3)
- From charge pressure control solenoid valve
8. Remove oil return hose (5)
- Place collecting basin underneath.
- From cylinder block
9. Remove atmospheric pressure sensor bracket
10. Remove wiring harness for starter
11. Remove starter

12. Install starter
- Insert starter
- Screw in bolts
- Tighten lower bolts (38.2 Nm / 28.1 lbf. ft.)
13. Attach wiring harness for starter
14. Attach atmospheric pressure sensor bracket
- Tighten bolts (9.8 Nm / 7.2 lbf. ft.)
15. Remove oil return hose
- Tighten clamp (3.5 Nm / 2.6 lbf. ft.)
16. Attach vacuum hose
17. Connect wiring harness plug for crankshaft pulse pick-up
18. Attach shift guide bracket
- Tighten bolt (20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft.)
- Attach retaining clip
19. Lower vehicle
20. Fasten upper part of starter
- Tighten bolt (60 Nm / 44.5 lbf. ft.)
- Note! Connect ground cable
21. Connect battery
22. Calibrate steering angle sensor
Note: Rotate the
steering wheel one time from its right-hand to its left-hand
stop.
23. Check and correct engine oil level
- Observe specified engine oil quantity
- Start engine and allow to run until oil pressure telltale
extinguishes.
- Check engine oil level, if necessary correct.
24. Program volatile memories
25. Close bonnet
