Remove auxiliary aggregates support – see operation "Auxiliary Aggregates Support, Remove and Install (without AC)" or "Auxiliary Aggregates Support, Remove and Install (with AC)".

Remove toothed belt drive gear – counterhold with KM-662-C (1). Detach wiring harness plug from oil pressure switch, remove wiring trough bracket and lower alternator bolt from oil pump.

Loosen upper alternator bolt – swing alternator aside. Remove upper part of oil pan housing – see operation "Upper Part of Oil Pan Housing, Remove and Install".

Detach oil intake pipe from oil pump and crankshaft bearing bridge. Remove oil pump from cylinder block, edge seal ring (2) out of oil pump.

  Clean

Remove gasket remnants and clean sealing surfaces.

Illustration L 1420 shows a comparison of oil pumps and rear toothed belt covers.

The shaded areas indicate the changes with regard to the previous version.

  Install

Version up to MY '99:

Before installing oil pump, coat seal evenly on pump side in shaded area with surface sealant (green) as shown in Illustration G 3193 (recommended value approx. 0.2 mm).

Caution

Do not coat oil ducts with surface sealant (green).

Note tightening sequence.

Attach oil pump to cylinder block. Note tightening sequence of fastening bolts (1 – 6) – tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.

Version as of MY '99: Before installing the oil pump, coat gasket evenly on pump side in shaded area with surface sealant (green) (recommended value approx. 0.2 mm).

Caution

Do not coat oil ducts with surface sealant (green).

Attach oil pump to cylinder block. Note tightening sequence for fastening bolts (1 to 7) and different bolt lengths.

Fastening bolts (1 to 5) – M8 x 45 – tightening torque 12 Nm / 9 lbf. ft.

Fastening bolts (6 and 7) – M8 x 25 – tightening torque 12 Nm / 9 lbf. ft.

Note:   Re-cut threads of fastening bolts and insert with screw locking compound (red).

Install lower toothed belt guide roller (2) – 40 Nm / 29.5 lbf. ft.

Attach alternator (1) to oil pump – tightening torque 35 Nm / 26 lbf. ft.

For detached rear toothed belt cover – allow surface sealant (green) for oil pump to harden for approx. 10 min.

Then tighten oil pump fastening bolts with torque of 10 Nm / 7 lbf. ft.

  Remove

Remove lower toothed belt guide roller again.

  Install

Attach oil intake tube with new seal ring to oil pump and crankshaft bearing bridge – 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.

Lightly coat sealing lip of the new seal ring with silicone grease (white). Insert seal ring in oil pump with KM-693-A (1) – use bolt and washer of toothed belt drive gear.

Install upper part of oil pan housing – see operation "Upper Part of Oil Pan Housing, Remove and Install". If not yet installed: Attach alternator with lower fastening bolt to oil pump – tightening torque 35 Nm / 26 lbf. ft.

Attach toothed belt drive gear with new fastening bolt to crankshaft – counterhold with KM-662-C (2) – tightening torque 250 Nm / 184 lbf. ft. + 45° + 15°.

Attach wiring harness plug to oil pressure switch and wiring trough bracket to oil pump.
