Toothed Belt Tension, Check  

Notice: 

This operation only refers to run-in toothed belts. For installation of a new toothed belt - see operation "Toothed Belt Tension, Adjust". Testing is performed with the engine cold - at room temperature.  

  Remove, Disconnect   

Disconnect ground cable from battery.  

Remove lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".     Adjust    Screw fastening bolt for toothed belt drive gear in crankshaft and turn crankshaft slowly and smoothly in direction of engine rotation to "1st cylinder ign. TDC" (III).   The marks on the camshaft pulleys must be opposite one another and align with the top edge of the cylinder head (I).   Fix camshaft sprockets in position with KM-852 (II).

  Inspect   

For X 16 XEL, Y 16 XE, Z 16 XE (Version I):   Check installation position of coolant pump - adjust if necessary. Mark (2) on coolant pump must align with mark (1) on cylinder block.   For X 18 XE1, Z 18 XE, Z 18 XEL (Version II):   Ensure that lug (3) on oil pump engages in the coolant pump groove.

  Inspect   

Check the toothed belt tension is correctly adjusted.   For version I, the toothed belt tension is correctly adjusted if the pointer (1) for the toothed belt tension roller is located approx. 4 mm to the left of the notch (2).   For version II, the toothed belt tension is correctly adjusted if the pointer (3) for the toothed belt tension roller aligns with the mark (4) "USED".   If the toothed belt tension is not correctly adjusted - see operation "Toothed Belt Tension, Adjust".     Remove, Disconnect    Remove fastening bolt from toothed belt drive gear and remove Locking Tool KM-852.     Install, Connect    Install lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".
