In event of complaints, determine the cause with the help of the pressure test and leakage test, and → fault finding programme running gear No. 10. If a fault is detected, the power assisted steering box can be repaired.
  Note
t  If fluid level in reservoir is low, check steering system for leaks.
t  If leakage appears near pipe connections, first check lines and connections for leaks, tighten connections as necessary and wipe dry.
t  Power assisted steering box can be renewed if leaks occur at steering pinion sealing ring or steering rack seal in steering gear housing.
t  To check steering rack seals, loosen hose clip on boot and push back boot.
t  Renew self-locking nuts and bolts.
t  Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.
t  Use only steering box grease -A0F 063 000 04- for greasing steering rack.
t  Fluid type: hydraulic fluid -G 002 000-
t  Fluid capacity in system: 0.7 ... 0.9 l.
t  Routing of suction and pressure line hoses → Chapter.
1 - Right track rod ball joint
q   Pressing off → Anchor.
q   Checking: → Booklet35.
Modification
q   Modified track rod ball joint for Golf Variant → Chapter.
2 - 50 Nm
3 - Clamp
4 - Boot
q   Unscrew track rod ball joint before removing
q   Check for wear (slits, cracks); check sealing surfaces and sealing lips for dirt/damage
q   Diameter of opening is greater than bellows of TRW power steering box.
q   Must not be installed on a TRW power steering box.
5 - Clamp
q   Renew - open with pincers
q   Tightening → Chapter.
q   Must not be installed on a TRW power steering box.
6 - Left track rod
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Diameter of ball joint on seat for bellows ZF: 15 mm Ø TRW: 12.7 mm Ø.
q   Must not be installed on a TRW power steering box.
q   Adjusting to length → Chapter.
7 - Clamp
q   Renew - open with pincers
q   Tightening → Chapter.
q   Must not be installed on a TRW power steering box.
8 - Right track rod
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Wheel alignment → Chapter
q   Diameter of ball joint on seat for bellows ZF: 15 mm Ø TRW: 12.7 mm Ø.
q   Must not be installed on a TRW power steering box.
9 - Left track rod ball joint
q   Pressing off → Anchor.
q   Checking: → Booklet35.
Modification
q   Modified track rod ball joint for Golf Variant → Chapter.
10 - Self-locking hexagon nut, 30 Nm
11 - Pressure equalising line
12 - Self-locking hexagon nut, 30 Nm
13 - Clamp
14 - Rubber insert
q   Inner diameter ZF: 50 mm TRW: 44 mm.
15 - Power steering box
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Adjusting → Chapter
q   Checking steering torque → Fault finding programme, running gear No. 10.
q   Steering box with mobility aid, only permitted for vehicles up to 66 kW.
q   16V and VR6 vehicles have a higher steering torque of approx. 2 Nm.
16 - 30 Nm
17 - Lower universal joint
18 - Cover washer
19 - O-ring
q   Renew
20 - Union nut, 30 Nm
21 - Identification plate and manufactures initials
