Draining and filling coolant
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Refractometer -T10007-
t  Cooling system tester adapter -V.A.G 1274/8-
t  Drip tray -V.A.G 1306-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Spring-type clip pliers -VAS 5024A-

Draining
  WARNING
Steam may escape when expansion tank is opened. Wear protective glasses and clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Remove insulation tray: → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.50

–  To drain coolant from radiator, remove drain plug -arrow- in radiator return.
  A10-0118
–  To drain coolant from engine, also remove coolant hose from oil cooler -arrow-.
  Note
Observe environmental regulations for disposal.
Filling
  Note
t  Use only coolant additive G12 that meets “TL VW 774 F”. Identification: purple colour.
t  G12 and coolant additives that conform to “TL VW 774 F” prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. Therefore, the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.
t  G 12 purple (in accordance with TL VW 774 F) can be mixed with the previous coolant additives G 11 and G 12 red!
t  Frost protection is required down to about -25 °C (in countries with arctic climates: down to about -35 °C).
t  The refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density.
t  If for climatic reasons greater frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40°C). Otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness are reduced again.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is renewed, do not reuse old coolant.
t  To fill cooling system, cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096- is recommended.

1)  The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon vehicle equipment.
–  Screw drain plug into radiator return.
–  Push coolant hose onto oil cooler connection and tighten.
With cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-
–  Screw adapter for cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274/8- onto expansion tank.
–  Fill coolant circuit using cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096- → Operating instructions for cooling system charge unit VAS 6096.
Without cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-

–  Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank.
–  Fit expansion tank cap.
–  Switch off heater and air conditioner.
–  Start engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2000 rpm for about 3 minutes.
–  Then run engine at idling speed until electric radiator fan cuts in.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Check coolant level and replenish as necessary. When engine is at normal operating temperature, coolant level must be at max. mark; when engine is cold, coolant level must be between min. and max. marks.
