Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-
–  Remove map-controlled engine cooling system thermostat -F265- → Chapter.
  Note
t  Draining coolant → Chapter.
t  Always renew seals and gaskets.
t  Filling coolant → Chapter.

–  Check thermostat when cold. The large valve disc must seal off the connection flange all the way round.
If not:
–  Renew map-controlled engine cooling system thermostat -F265-.
  N19-0283
–  Connect contacts of map-controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265- to battery using auxiliary cables from auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-. Using pliers, carefully place thermostat vertically up to flange in pot of boiling coolant (mixture ratio: 50% G12).
  WARNING
Do not touch metal parts of thermostats, as they heat up. Danger of burns!
The electric heating element now additionally heats the wax in the thermostat.
  N19-0282
–  Check whether the minimum travel of 7 mm is attained after 10 minutes -arrows-.
If 7 mm travel is attained:
–  Disconnect voltage supply from battery.
  Note
Do not expose to air during test. The expansion element could otherwise be damaged!
If the minimum travel is not attained:
–  Renew map-controlled engine cooling system thermostat -F265-.
