Removing

  • ◆ Before replacing left-hand oil seal:
  • ‒ Remove drive shaft

=> Running gear; Repair group 40

  • ◆ Before replacing right-hand oil seal:
  • ‒ Turn steering to right onto full lock stop.
  • ‒ Remove drive shaft protective cover from engine.
  • ‒ Disconnect drive shaft from flanged shaft.
 
V34-2004
  • ‒ Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.
  • ‒ → Place a chisel or distance piece -A- under the flange shaft and pull flange shaft out of the sun wheels by turning bolt -B-.

Note:

If when removing the flange shaft it does not come out square, insert a bolt in the opposite hole to assist removal.

  • ‒ → Always renew flange shaft circlip.
  • ‒ Clamp flange shaft in vice, using vice clamps. Use new circlip -A- to press old circlip out of groove in flange shaft.
  • ‒ Pull out flange shaft oil seal with VW 681.

Installing

  • ‒ → Knock new flange shaft oil seal in flush, do not cant seal when doing this.
  • ‒ Fill space between sealing and dust lips with multi-purpose grease.
  • ‒ Knock flange shaft in with drift VW 295.
  • ‒ Install left-hand drive shaft or reconnect right-hand drive shaft to flange shaft.
  • ‒ Bolt on drive shaft protective cover if required.
  • ‒ Top up gearbox oil => Page 34-51

Tightening torques

Drive shaft to flange shaft

45 Nm

Drive shaft protective cover to engine

35 Nm
