Removing

  • ◆ Before replacing left-hand oil seal:
  • ‒ Remove drive shaft

=> Repair group 40; removing and installing drive shaft

  • ◆ Before replacing right-hand oil seal:
  • ‒ Turn steering to right onto full lock stop.
  • ‒ Remove drive shaft protective cover from engine.
  • ‒ Disconnect drive shaft from flanged shaft.
  • ‒ Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.
 
V39-1961
  • ‒ Place drip tray underneath.
  • ‒ Remove flange shaft cone head bolt with V.A.G 1669 or (commercially available) 6 mm socket, counterhold with drift.
  • ‒ Remove flanged shaft with spring.
  • ‒ → Pull out seal.

Notes:

  • ◆ Do not damage sleeve, otherwise leaks will occur.
  • ◆ Replace sleeve if damaged
    => Page 34-89 .

Installing

 
V39-1962
  • ‒ → Drive seal into sleeve onto stop, when doing this do not cant seal.
  • ‒ Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
  • ‒ Insert drive shaft.
  • ‒ Install cone head bolt into flange shaft threaded piece.
  • ‒ Install left-hand drive shaft or attach right-hand drive shaft to flange shaft.
  • ‒ Install drive shaft protective cover if necessary.
  • ‒ Top up gearbox oil => Page 34-51 .

Tightening torques

Flange shaft to gearbox (cone head bolt)


25 Nm

Drive shaft to flange shaft

45 Nm

Drive shaft protective cover to engine

35 Nm
