Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with diagnosis cable -V.A.G 1551/3-
Procedure
–  First print out the control unit identification and thereby the previous control unit coding as follows:
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- and select engine electronics control unit with “address word” 01 → Chapter; connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and select engine electronics control unit.
   
The fault reader -V.A.G 1551- display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:
–  Print out the control unit identification by pressing the Print button on fault reader -V.A.G 1551-.
–  Press button.
–  Press buttonss 0 and 6 for function “End output” and confirm entry with Q button.
–  Switch off ignition.
Removing engine control unit
–  Remove plenum chamber cover.
–  Release and pull off control unit connector.

–  Unclip the control unit from the retainer.
–  Install new control unit.
–  Check the previous coding and the coding of the new control unit → Chapter.
–  Adapt engine control unit to electronic immobilizer → Chapter.
–  Then interrogate the fault memory of the new engine control unit and erase the fault memory if necessary, clear fault memory → Chapter
