Z54 Misfire error in one cylinder

The tester indicates an error: cylinder X misfiring

NOTA: Carry out the procedure for the circuit in the cylinder for which the error was detected

StepTest procedureResultAction
0PRELIMINARY CHECKS

Check correct connection and operation of ignition circuit, with particular attention to:

OK

Move onto step 1

Electrical circuit anomalies

Move onto step 11

1CHECKING IGNITION COILS

Use the Examiner 1806369000 coil to run a visual check on the operation of the coil connected to the affected cylinder.

In particular, check that sparking takes place regularly

OK

Move onto step 2

The coil does not produce regular sparks

Move onto step 7

2CHECKING SPARK PLUG STATUS

Check that the gap between the affected spark plug electrodes are withiin permitted limits.

Also check that the electrodes are not worn/broken

OK

Move onto step 3

Spark plug anomaly

Move onto step 11

3CHECKING FUEL PRESSURE

Turn the key to MAR and check fuel pump activates.

While the pump is active, check fuel pressure is not too low

OK

Move onto step 4

Pressure is too low
  • Check that the injector is not locked open and that there are no leaks Replace the injector if necessary Op. 1056B70

Move onto step 11

4INJECTOR ACTIVE DIAGNOSIS

Carry out active diagnosis on the affected injector. Check it is not locked shut

OK

Move onto step 5

Injector locked shut

Move onto step 11

5CHECKING CYLINDER COMPRESSION

Carry out a compression test on the affected cylinder Op. 0510A10

OK

Move onto step 11

Compression insufficient in affected cylinder

Move onto step 6

6CHECKING CAUSE OF INSUFFICIENT COMPRESSION

Carry out R/R on head to check the valve seal

Check the condition of the cylinders/piston rings

OK

Incorrect selection of diagnostic procedure

Insufficient valve seal

Move onto step 11

Cylinders/piston rings worn
  • Restore the seal

Move onto step 11

7CHECKING COIL RESISTANCE

See Test 5510C Coil resistance check Check that the resistance of the primary and secondary circuits is within permitted limits for the affected coil

OK

Move onto step 8

Some values are outside permitted tolerances

Move onto step 11

8CHECKING INSULATION BETWEEN CIRCUITS

Check insulation is present between the primary and secondary windings of the affected coil

OK

Move onto step 9

Insulation not correct

Move onto step 11

9CHECKING IGNITION CIRCUIT

Check connection between wiring and connectors and ignition circuit is correct Wiring diagram E5030 PETROL ENGINES ELECTRONIC CONTROL . In particular, check there are not SCs or ACs

If present, check connections between power module and engine control unit

OK

Move onto step 10

Faults in connections

Move onto step 11

10REPLACING COIL

Exchange the effected coil with a coil from another cylinder Op. 5510C14 and use the coil of Examiner 1806369000 to check that sparking is regular

OK

Move onto step 11

Sparking is not regular
  • Repair the old coil and replace the engine control unit Op. 1056B82

Move onto step 11

11CANCELLING AND CHECKING THE ERROR

Use a tester to cancel the errors in the control unit

Carry out a road test and check that the error does not recur

OK

Move onto step 12

Anomaly persists. This step has already been reached once or twice before and the control unit has not yet been replaced

Move onto step 0

Anomaly persists but this is the third time this step has been reached or the control unit has already been replaced
  • Contact Technical Service for more information about the problem

End of diagnosis

12CHECKING CORRECT OPERATION

Check that the fault is no longer present

OK

Incorrect selection of diagnostic procedure

Fault persists

Incorrect selection of diagnostic procedure
