Canister Purge Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Carbon  Canister Frequency Valve

CIS Turbo ECU Harness Connector (Pin # Locations)

 
ENGINES WITH TWO KNOCK SENSORS ONLY

1.

Disconnect vacuum hose between frequency valve and canister, at the frequency valve.

2.

Blow into canister side of valve (or use vacuum/pressure pump). Valve should be closed (no air passes through). If not, replace valve.

3.

Run engine until normal operating temperature is reached, then observe canister frequency valve.

Valve should operate. When valve is operating normally, there will be an audible "clicking" sound from the valve as it cycles on and off, and
measurable vacuum should be present on canister side of the valve. If there is no measurable vacuum on canister side of valve when valve is
operating, replace valve.

4.

If valve does not operate, disconnect electrical connector from valve, and connect an LED test light between the two terminals of the harness
connector.

LED should flash when connected with proper polarity. If the LED flashes, but the valve did not operate, replace the valve. If the LED does
not flash, or lights and stays on, check for:
a.

Open or grounded circuit between frequency valve electrical connector terminal #1 (Blu/Blk wire) and fuse #28 in fuse relay panel.

b.

Open or grounded circuit between valve electrical connector terminal #2 and ECU terminal #3.

 
If no wiring problems have been found, and LED does not flash or lights and stays on, then the ECU is faulty.
