Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

1.

On 100/200 models, remove wheel trim or cover, then loosen lug nuts.

2.

On V8 Quattro models, remove cap from wheel using removal tool 3208 or equivalent, then loosen lug nuts.

3.

Remove axle nut or bolt and washer if equipped. Remove and install axle nut only with wheels on ground. Do not move vehicle without driveshaft
or outer constant velocity joint installed.

4.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.

5.

Pull out wheel speed sensor, if equipped.

6.

Remove stabilizer bar clamps on both sides.

7.

Remove caliper mounting bolts, then remove caliper, leaving hydraulic line connected.

8.

Remove brake disc, then the bolt for control arm ball joint.

9.

Press out ball joint using a suitable puller, then using a length of pipe approximately 5 ft. long, press down on stabilizer bar to separate joint. End
of pipe must contact subframe near rear mount.

10.

Disconnect tie rod from steering knuckle.

11.

Remove spring strut cover, then nuts securing top of strut while supporting strut from below. Remove strut from vehicle.

12.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check front suspension alignment.
b. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
