Removing and installing steering column Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332- Removing The replacement steering column is only supplied as a complete unit. Repair is not possible. The following parts must be transferred if the steering column is renewed: On vehicles with no "keyless entry system", remove and install steering lock housing → Rep. gr.94. On vehicles with "keyless entry system", remove and install electronic steering column lock control unit -J764- → Chapter.   WARNING Observe the following requirements before working on the electrical system or removing the steering wheel with airbag: t  Disconnect earth strap from battery → Rep. gr.27. t  Make sure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Failure to comply with these precautions can lead to subsequent failure of the airbag system. –  Turn wheels to straight ahead position. –  Pull down lever on side of steering column. –  Swing steering column down as far as possible and pull out. –  Press lever on side of steering column back up. –  Remove driver's airbag → Rep. gr.69. –  Remove airbag steering wheel → Chapter. –  Remove dash panel trim on driver's side → Rep. gr.68. –  Remove crash bar. –  Remove steering angle sender -G85- → Rep. gr.45. –  Remove steering column switch module → Rep. gr.94.

Vehicles with ignition lock –  Unplug connector -arrow- from immobiliser reader coil -D2-. –  Unplug connector -2- from ignition/starter switch -1-. –  Move electrical wiring clear.

Vehicles with "keyless entry system" –  Release connector -1- and detach from electronic steering column lock control unit -J764-. –  Unclip cable guide -arrow- and move electrical wiring clear.

All vehicles (continued): –  Fold floor covering back slightly. –  Unscrew bolt -arrow- from universal joint -1- and pull off universal joint in direction of -arrow-.

–  Unscrew lower securing bolt -arrow- on left of brake pedal from mounting bracket.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- from steering column and hold steering column.

–  Lower steering column -1- slightly and pull carefully out of guide -arrow- on mounting bracket -2-.   Caution Observe instructions for handling and transporting steering column → Chapter.

Installing Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following: Tightening torques → Chapter „Steering column - exploded view“ –  Fit projections -arrow A- on steering column -1- into guides -arrow B- on mounting bracket -2-.

–  Swivel steering column up, align with mounting bracket and bring into position. l  The holes -arrows- be aligned with the pins -1-. If this is not done, it will not be possible to locate the steering column correctly in relation to the mounting bracket.   Note When installing the steering column, it is important to keep strictly to the specified sequence for fitting the securing bolts.

–  Tighten steering column bolts -arrows-. –  Release lever on side of steering column.

–  Screw in lower securing bolt -arrow- and tighten.

–  Fit universal joint -1- onto steering pinion. –  Insert new hexagon bolt -arrow- and tighten. l  The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence.   WARNING Make sure there is no-one in the vehicle when connecting the battery. –  Perform basic setting for steering angle sender -G85- using vehicle diagnostic tester.
