1Calculated ambient temperature transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-
l  Data is exchanged via the convenience data bus.
l  The control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- calculates the current ambient temperature allowing for the incoming temperature readings (ambient temperature sensor -G17-, fresh-air intake duct temperature sensor -G89-), the vehicle speed, the vehicle standing time, etc.
2The value measured by the ambient temperature sensor -G17- in °C, transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-
l  Data is transmitted via the convenience data bus
l  The ambient temperature sensor -G17- is connected to the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-

t  Check the value measured by the ambient temperature sensor -G17-. → Electrical System; Repair group 01
t  Values measured by the ambient temperature sensor -G17- and by the fresh-air intake duct temperature sensor -G89- are impaired, for example, by heat radiating from the radiator and the exhaust system when the vehicle is stationary. Therefore, the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- features a program which causes a higher temperature reading (resulting from the vehicle being held up in a traffic jam or urban traffic) to be suppressed and the lower temperature reading to be indicated on the ambient temperature display.
t  The basis for the display in display zone “1” is the lower of the two ambient temperature readings (see display zone “2” and display group “007” display zone “4”. The value is saved for up to 4 hours after the ignition is switched off.

  Note
t  The dash panel temperature sensor -G56- is ventilated by the temperature sensor blower -V42-. If the intake aperture in the trim panel of the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- is closed or if the temperature sensor blower -V42- is not in operation, the temperature sensor cannot record the actual temperature of the passenger compartment properly, and there will be problems with system regulation.
t  The dash panel temperature sensor -G56- is permanently installed in the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- and cannot be replaced separately.
t  The temperature sensor blower -V42- is installed in the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- and can be replaced separately → Chapter.
t  The temperature sensor blower -V42- is always in operation when the ignition is switched on.
