The coolant temperature and engine speed transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-, the idling speed regulation and vehicle speed

Display zoneMeaningExplanatory Notes
1Coolant temperature transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- in °C
l  Data is transmitted via the convenience data bus
2Idling speed regulation (idling speed increase)
t  Display = Off
–  No increase in idling speed requested by the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-
t  Display = On
–  Increase in idling speed requested by the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87-
l  Data is transmitted via the convenience data bus

  Note
t  To avoid the compressor having to be shut down suddenly due to an excessively high coolant temperature, its output is regulated by the operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- as soon as the coolant temperature transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- exceeds 115° C (at 118° C the compressor is shut down completely).
t  Check the idling speed regulation function (idling speed increase). → Relevant Workshop Manual, Injection and Ignition system; Repair group 01
t  A prerequisite for switching on the idling speed regulation is the absence of any compressor shut-off criterion preventing actuation of the air conditioner compressor regulating valve -N280- (e.g. the engine is not running or “Econ” mode is selected). The operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87- switches a positive signal, for example, at the “Lo” or “Hi” temperature preselection setting
t  The engine control unit is informed via this output (for idling speed regulation) that the air conditioner needs a higher engine speed to achieve the specified setting (a higher compressor speed or increased heat output from the engine).

3Engine speed (rpm) transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-
l  Data is transmitted via the convenience data bus
4Vehicle speed (km/h) transmitted by the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285-
t  Display = 0
–  No vehicle-speed signal detected since the ignition was switched on
t  Display = 1
–  A speed signal of over 5 km/h has been received from the control unit in the dash panel insert -J285- at least once since the ignition was switched on
t  Display = 1.....
–  Current vehicle speed in km/h
l  Data is transmitted via the convenience data bus

  Note
If, after the ignition was switched on prior to the start of self-diagnosis, the vehicle travelled at more than 5 km/h, when the vehicle is at a standstill the display “1” indicates that a speed signal has been received at least once.
