Safety precautions when working on vehicles fitted with auxiliary heater
t  The auxiliary heater should not be switched on in areas where there is a danger of fire or explosion.
–  The auxiliary heater can be switched off for example via the rotary knob/pushbutton in the centre console or the switch on the windscreen wiper lever on the steering column
–  On vehicles with diesel engine on which the auxiliary heater operates as additional heater, this function is to be deactivated for example by pressing “Econ” or “OFF” button on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (air conditioning unit).
t  Auxiliary heater is not to be switched on in enclosed areas without the use of an exhaust-gas extractor.
t  Always observe the relevant safety regulations when working on the fuel system → Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr.20 or → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.20.
t  Engine is not to be started if parts of the fuel system (e.g. metering pump, fuel pipe or fuel gauge sender) have been removed or opened.
t  On completion of repairs to auxiliary heater or fuel system check operation of auxiliary heater.
t  Before starting repair work on auxiliary heater:
–  Dissipate pressure in cooling system by opening cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Interrupt power and fuel supply for auxiliary heater (e.g. by removing fuse for auxiliary heater). → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  If auxiliary heater is to be renewed, read out coding and adaption of auxiliary heater control unit -J364- via “Replacing control unit” function in Guided Fault Finding → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  After completing repairs of auxiliary heater, perform Guided Fault Finding (check coding, perform basic setting, interrogate fault memory and perform adaption) → Guided Fault Finding function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Avoid repeated activation of auxiliary heater without intermediate heating operation (repeated deactivation of auxiliary heater during start sequence can cause fuel to accumulate in combustion chamber and result in intense auxiliary heater smoke generation on subsequent attempted starting).
