Removing and installing heater controls / air conditioner controls
Heater controls, heater control unit -J65- on vehicles with no air conditioner
Air conditioner controls, air conditioning system control unit -J301- on vehicles with manually controlled air conditioner
  Note

t  There are different versions of the heater control unit -J65- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) -A- (with and without heated seat regulators (heated driver seat regulator -E94- and heated front passenger seat regulator -E95-) -C-). → Electronic parts catalogue
t  As of Model Year 2010 a start/stop system will be available as an optional extra for this vehicle in conjunction with certain engines. On vehicles with a heater only (no „air conditioner“ optional extra) the heater control unit -J65- has no effect on the start/stop function. On vehicles with a manually controlled air conditioner, the stop function may be inhibited or the engine re-started as soon as heating is requested depending on the setting on the air conditioning system control unit -J301- (e.g. in heating mode). In cooling mode there is no restriction of the stop function by way of -J301- → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Vehicles with a start/stop system are not fitted with an additional coolant pump for the start/stop function. Depending on the engine version, there may however be an electric coolant pump which is actuated by the corresponding engine control unit → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Vehicles with a start/stop system and a manually controlled air conditioner are only to be fitted with an air conditioning system control unit -J301- with part no. 8P0 820 047 as of index „D“ → Electronic parts catalogue.
t  Vehicles with a 5-cyl. engine and a manually controlled air conditioner are only to be fitted with an air conditioning system control unit -J301- with part no. 8P0 820 047 as of index „D“ → Electronic parts catalogue.
  A80-0240
t  The heater controls (heater control unit -J65-) -A- have no event recorder (guided fault-finding not possible) and are not connected to the data bus.
  A80-0241
t  The air conditioner controls (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) -A- are provided with an event recorder (guided fault-finding possible) and are connected to the data bus. Prior to removal, the event recorder is therefore to be interrogated if applicable → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
Removing
–  Remove the radio or radio navigation system: → Radio, telephone and navigation system; Rep. gr.91
–  Remove the centre console handles if applicable → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68
  Note
  A87-10275
There are different versions of the centre console handles (e.g. with and without leather cover). In the case of the version with leather cover, there may not be enough space to remove the trim -A- or the actuator and the handles could be damaged.
–  Detach the trim for the heater controls -A- (air conditioner controls).
  Note
If necessary, use a small screwdriver to carefully lift the trim.
–  Screw out the bolts -B- and -C-.
–  Unfasten the heater control unit -J65- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) -D- from the centre console.
  A80-0242
–  Release the locking element of the connector catch -A- by pulling in arrow direction.
–  Press the connector catch -B- towards the connector -arrow- and unplug the connector -C-.
–  Release the catch of the connector -D- and unplug the connector -D-.
  A80-0243
–  Release the connector -C- (air conditioning system control unit -J301- only) in the same manner as the connector -B- and unplug.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
  A87-10275
–  The two shafts of the heater control unit -J65--C- can only be inserted in one position in the mounts of the base plate -D-. The rotary controls -A- and -B- are therefore to be turned until the position of their shafts coincides with that of the shaft mount in the base plate.
–  The air distribution shafts of the air conditioning system control unit -J301--C- can only be inserted in one position in the mounts of the base plate -D-. The rotary controls -B- are therefore to be turned until the position of their shafts coincides with that of the shaft mount in the base plate.
  A80-0244
–  The base plate of the heater controls -A- is provided with adjustment lever locking elements -D- and -F- (at the factory to stop the setting being altered during transportation). These locking elements are released by way of the lugs -C- (for air distribution) and -E- (for temperature setting, version for vehicles with no air conditioner only) of the heater control unit -J65- (air conditioning system control unit -J301-) -B- on attachment. If the lugs -C- (and -E- on version for vehicles with no air conditioner) are not properly inserted, the corresponding rotary control will be difficult to turn or will click on turning.
