Removing
Vehicles with 2.0 ltr. FSI engine:
–  Disconnect hose -1- and connector -2- at air cleaner housing.
–  Remove bolt -3-.
–  Release spring clips -4- and detach air intake hose.
–  Take out air cleaner housing.

Vehicles with 1.8 ltr. TFSI engine:
–  Pull off cover for air duct (release retaining clips -arrows- on the sides).

–  Pull off bottom section of air duct (release retaining clips -arrows-).
–  Detach bottom section of air duct with air hose.

–  Unplug electrical connector -1- from air mass meter -G70-.
–  Remove air hose -2-.
–  Remove bolt -4- and remove air cleaner housing.
  Note
-Item 3- can be disregarded.
All vehicles:
–  Move driver's seat to rear as far as possible and move steering wheel into uppermost position.
  Caution
Follow steps required when disconnecting battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.

–  Detach cover above battery (press release tab -arrow-).

–  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap -arrow-.

–  Remove battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove battery tray -arrows- (detach front of battery tray from air duct if applicable).

In the following steps make sure that no brake fluid escapes onto the longitudinal member or onto the gearbox below. If this does happen, clean the affected area thoroughly.
–  Use hose clamp -3094- to clamp off supply hose to clutch master cylinder.

–  Disconnect supply hose at clutch master cylinder (if necessary, release spring-type clip -3- using hose clip pliers -VAS 6340-).
–  Release clip -2- with a screwdriver and disconnect pipe/hose assembly -1- from clutch master cylinder.
–  Unclip and detach clutch position sender -G476- from clutch master cylinder -arrow-. Electrical connector -4- can remain connected.

–  Remove storage compartment on driver's side → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.
–  Unscrew bolt -arrow A- and remove footwell vent (front left) -1- → Heating, air conditioning; Rep. gr.80.
–  Unclip wiring harness at rear of footwell vent -1- and move clear to one side.
–  Unbolt crash bar -2- (secured by one or two bolts -arrows B-, depending on version).
  Note
When working in the footwell, put cloths on the floor covering to protect it from possible brake fluid spills.

–  Remove nuts -2-.
–  Take out mounting bracket -1-.
Installing
l  Tightening torque → Chapter
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:

t  Renew self-locking nuts.
t  Secure all hose connections with the correct hose clips (as original equipment); refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.

–  Fit mounting bracket -1- and tighten nuts -2-.
–  Connect pipe/hose assembly → Fig..
–  Bleed clutch system → Chapter.
–  Install crash bar → Fig..
–  Install footwell vent (front left) → Heating, air conditioning; Rep. gr.80.
–  Install storage compartment on driver's side → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.
–  Install battery tray and battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Install complete air cleaner housing → Rep. gr.24.
