Removing and installing camshafts

Note

The following description is for removing and installing on right-side cylinder head.

Removing

–	Remove engine: Vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.

–	Separate engine and gearbox: vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.

–	Remove timing chains from camshafts → Chapter.

–	Remove housing for camshaft control valves -arrows-.

–	Detach diamond-coated washer from camshaft.

–	Unscrew bearing caps -1-, -E3-, -E5-, -A3- and -A5-.

–	Remove oil deflector -arrow-.

–	Loosen bearing caps -E2-, -E4-, -A2- and -A4- on inlet and exhaust camshaft in stages in diagonal sequence and remove.

–	Remove the inlet and exhaust camshaft.

Installing

l	Crankshaft locked in TDC position with locking pin -3242-.

Note

Renew bolts which are tightened to a specified angle as well as oil seals and gaskets.

–	Install camshafts in cylinder head in TDC position:

l	The slits -arrows- at front of the camshafts must be parallel to and at the same height as the top edge of cylinder head.

–	Fit bearing caps -E2-, -E4-, -A2- and -A4-.

–	Install oil deflector -arrow-:

l	On right-side cylinder head between bearing caps -E4- and -A2-.

l	On left-side cylinder head between bearing caps -E2- and -A2-.

–	Tighten bearing caps -E2-, -E4-, -A2- and -A4- on inlet and exhaust camshafts in stages in diagonal sequence.

–	Tighten the remaining bearing caps in diagonal sequence.

Note

Note the dowel sleeves on bearing cap -1-.

–	Fit new diamond-coated washer → Item on camshaft.

–	Install housing for camshaft control valves.

Remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:

–	Install camshaft timing chains → Anchor.

–	Install engine: vehicles with manual gearbox → Chapter; vehicles with automatic gearbox → Chapter.

Tightening torques

Component	Nm
Bearing cap to cylinder head	5 + 90° → Note → Note
Housing for camshaft control valve	5 + 90° → Note → Note

¹⁾	90° equals a 1/4 turn.

²⁾	Renew bolts.
