Removing and installing operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-
  Note
Depending on the date of issue, the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- may also be referred to as air conditioning system/Climatronic operating and display unit -E87- in various workshop publications (e.g. in current flow diagrams for vehicles up to Model Year 2004).
–  Removing and installing operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- → Chapter.
There are different versions of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the part number index must therefore be heeded → Parts List
t  With and without radio navigation system (or radio with large control panel)
t  With and without switch for seat heating
t  With Off button or with “Automatic air recirculation” button (vehicles with air quality sensor -G238-
t  Vehicles with auxiliary heater as optional extra are only to be fitted with operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- as of hardware/software version “0712” (operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- up to hardware/software version “0711” were fitted at the start of production).
t  Vehicles as of Model Year 2003 are only to be fitted with operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number index “H” onwards.
t  Vehicles with 4-cyl. engine and petrol direct injection (FSI) are only to be fitted with operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number index “H” onwards.
t  Vehicles up to chassis number “399999” in Model Year 2005 (Saloon and Avant) and “012912” in Model Year 2005 (Cabrio) → Parts catalogue are not to be fitted with operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number as of index “AJ”.
t  Vehicles as of chassis number “400000” in Model Year 2005 (Saloon and Avant) and “012913” in Model Year 2005 (Cabrio) → Parts catalogue are only to be fitted with operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number as of index “AJ”.
  Note
t  When replacing operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, attention must be paid to exact assignment → Parts List.
t  After installing an operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, perform air conditioner basic setting in the specified manner → Chapter.
t  If a new operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- has been fitted and basic setting not performed, the air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- is not actuated and shutoff criterion “6” appears in measured value block “2” when performing air conditioner self-diagnosis.
t  The functions selected are indicated by lighting of LEDs in the various operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- buttons.
t  With this version of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the dash panel temperature sensor -G56-, the temperature sensor blower -V42- and the heated rear window switch (including potentiometers for heated seats) are integrated and cannot be replaced separately.
t  Following replacement of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-:
t  - Always encode operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- → Chapter.
t  - Always perform basic setting → Chapter.
t  - Always interrogate fault memory → Chapter.
t  On this vehicle, the basic settings (e.g. country version, left-hand drive or right-hand drive) of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- are encoded by the control unit in dash panel insert -J285-. The data are transmitted by way of the convenience data bus system to the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. The currently valid code is displayed in the measured value block → Chapter. The direct entry of a code in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- is provided for certain items of equipment (e.g. heated windscreen or sun roof with solar cells) → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 and → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.01.
t  The unit (°C or °F) for the temperature display of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- is transmitted by the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- and is determined by the code entered in this.
t  The unit used for the display can be switched by simultaneously pressing the “Air recirculation mode” and “Temperature +” buttons for the left side for more than 2 seconds.
t  The operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- then transmits the ambient temperature with the altered unit to the control unit in dash panel insert -J285-. The control unit in dash panel insert -J285- adopts this change. The same unit is used for the display in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- and the ambient temperature display in the dash panel insert.
t  Switching of the unit used for the display in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- applies to all ignition keys.
t  If an operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- with hardware/software version up to “XX14” is replaced on vehicles with auxiliary heater by a model with hardware/software version as of “XX15” (index “H” onwards), attention is to be paid to the information for vehicles with auxiliary heater → Chapter.
t  As of April 2002, operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number index “H” onwards (with hardware/software version as of “XX15”) have gradually been installed. With these operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- the passenger compartment temperature regulation is designed to be somewhat cooler. → Parts List
t  As of Model Year 2003, operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- with part number index “H” onwards (with hardware/software version as of “XX16”) have gradually been installed. These operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255- differ as follows from the model with software version “XX15”:
t  - Modified passenger compartment temperature regulation for Audi Cabrio and open convertible top (designed to be somewhat cooler)
t  - Extended temperature adjustment range; 16 °C (instead of 18 °C) is now the lowest temperature which can be set → Parts List
t  - With the Audi Cabrio, different settings are stored for closed and open convertible top in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. On opening and closing the convertible top, the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- then automatically alters the setting to the value last set with convertible top closed or open.
t  If the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- displays a number, interrogate the fault memory of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (the number “60” for example indicates a fault at the temperature sensor blower -V42-). If the display of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- flashes and no fault is displayed in the fault memory (e.g. with display “09”), there is a fault in the electronics of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
