Removing
  WARNING
t  The lock carrier must remain installed throughout the procedure, and must not be moved to the service position.
t  This is the only way to ensure that the engine/gearbox assembly does not drop out towards the rear when the tunnel cross member is released.
t  The torque reaction support on the lock carrier takes up the weight of the assembly.
–  Remove selector lever handle → Chapter.
–  Remove selector mechanism cover → Chapter.
–  Shift selector lever to position “D”.

–  Insert socket and key -T40031- through access hole in selector mechanism and loosen clamping bolt at rear of selector lever cable approx. 1 turn.
  Note
t  Only loosen clamping bolt approx. one turn - do not remove.
t  Clamping bolt can only be accessed with selector lever in position “D”.
t  With clamping bolt loosened, selector lever must remain in position “D”.

–  Remove rear noise insulation (loosen fasteners -2- and -3-).

–  Remove front tunnel brace -2-, to do so unscrew bolts -1-.
  Note
-Items 3 and 4- can be disregarded.

  Caution
The flexible joint (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.
–  Remove nuts -arrows-.
–  Detach front section of exhaust system at particulate filter.

–  Remove heat shield below selector mechanism -arrows-.

Vehicles with noise insulation -A- located below selector mechanism:
–  Remove four retaining washers -arrows-.
–  Pull off noise insulation -A- and slide forwards.

All models:
–  Release electrical connector -1- and detach from gearbox.
  Note
-Arrows- can be disregarded.

–  Apply lifting column of engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to tunnel cross member from below (place a block of wood -1- between lifting column and tunnel cross member).
–  Support the tunnel cross member with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
  WARNING
Risk of injury
The lock carrier must remain installed, and must not be moved to the service position.
  A37-0446
–  First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-.
–  Slowly lower tunnel cross member with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.

–  Remove bolts -2- and detach bracket -3- for selector lever cable from gearbox.
  Note
Pressure differential sender and electrical connector for temperature sender remain attached to bracket.

–  Use removal lever -80 - 200- to prise selector lever cable -A- off selector shaft lever -arrow-.

–  Pull off retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable from the side.
–  Pull selector lever cable -2- out of selector mechanism.
  Note
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
Installing
l  Tightening torques → Chapter
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:
  Note
t  Renew retaining washers.
t  Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
t  Before installing, lightly grease cable eye and ball socket on selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease -G 052 142 A2-.

Vehicles with noise insulation -A- located below selector mechanism:
–  Slide noise insulation -A- onto selector lever cable.

All models:
–  Renew O-ring -1- on selector lever cable.
–  Insert selector lever cable into selector mechanism -arrow-.

–  Secure selector lever cable -2- to selector mechanism with retaining clip -1-.
l  Installation position: angled end of retaining clip must point towards selector mechanism.

Vehicles with noise insulation -A- located below selector mechanism:
–  Secure noise insulation to selector mechanism using four new retaining washers -arrows-.

All models:
–  Attach selector lever cable -5- to support bracket -4- by tightening lock nuts -6-.

–  Press selector shaft lever -A- at gearbox to rear as far as it will go -arrow- until parking lock engages.
  Note
When the parking lock has engaged it should no longer be possible to rotate both front wheels in one direction at the same time.
–  Then push selector shaft lever forward three notches so that gearbox is in position “D”.
–  Check that selector lever is also in position “D” inside the vehicle.

–  Carefully press ball socket -5- of selector lever cable onto selector shaft lever -7- in this position.
  Note
Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing on cable; support lever if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted accurately.
  A37-10406
–  Check that selector lever is set accurately in position “D”. To do so, push selector lever slightly towards driver's seat -arrow A-.
  Note
Do not touch selector lever again during adjustment process.
–  Insert socket and key -T40031- through hole in selector mechanism and tighten clamping bolt in this position, taking care not to touch touch selector lever.
–  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter.
–  Secure particulate filter → Rep. Gr.26.
–  Install heat shield below selector mechanism → Rep. Gr.66.
–  Install tunnel cross member → Rep. Gr.40.
