Removing and installing rear lid hinge
   
Removing and installing rear lid hinge
1 - Rear lid

q   Removing:
–  Only loosen rear nut on rear lid and unscrew the two nuts on the side.
–  Unscrew bolts beneath rear shelf and take out hinge.
q   Installing:
–  Insert hinge under rear shelf and secure lightly with nuts.
–  Position rear lid on hinge and secure with nuts.
–  Engage spring and gas strut.
–  Carefully close rear lid.
–  Align rear lid at sides and lengthwise.

q   Not available as a separate replacement part

q   Pay attention to attachment points.

   
Attachment points for spring
1 - Spring
q   Engaging:
–  With rear lid open, first attach spring to hinge and then to body.
–  On left side of vehicle, spring eye on retaining pin must point downwards, as shown in detail view.
–  On right side it should point upwards.
q   Body attachment points:
–  On right side of vehicle, attach spring at point -a-.
–  On left side, attach spring at location -d- after installing buffer stop for rear lid hinge.
2 - Retaining pin
q   Note different direction of attachment of spring on left and right.
q   On left side spring should point downwards, on right side it should point upwards.

   
Removing cable guide for rear lid hinge
1 - Rear lid

q   Unclip retaining tabs -arrows- and detach cable guide from rear lid hinge.
4 - Electrical wiring
5 - Rear lid trim
q   Removing → Rep. gr.70
6 - Intermediate piece
q   Can only be removed after detaching rear lid trim
q   Unclip from rear lid

   
Removing cover for spring
–  Detach cover from spring at side and pull off retaining pin towards rear.

Disengaging gas strut
–  Lift retaining springs -arrow- on gas strut -1- slightly using a small screwdriver and disengage from ball stud -2-

Buffer stop for rear lid hinge
–  To remove, push catch on clip to side and release.
–  Clip buffer stop -2- into place under rear shelf -1- in direction of -arrow-.
–  Catch must engage audibly on clip.

Releasing gas from gas strut
–  Clamp section -x = 50 mm- of gas strut in a vice.
  WARNING
t  Only the section indicated may be clamped in the vice (accident risk!).
t  Always wear safety goggles while sawing.
  Note
Cover area around saw cut with a cloth to catch any fluid which may escape.
–  Saw open first third of cylinder part of gas strut (measured from piston rod end of cylinder).
